Why was John Carter of mars so underrated?

There's a lot of post-mortem about "John Carter," but how about some love for "Cloud Atlas"?

I passed on it, like the Lone Ranger. Doesn't mean I won't watch it down the road though.

I never read the books and only had slight knowledge of the character and storyline so my expectation were limited and formed soley from the commercials and trailer. I thought it was okay, not great but not horrible. I liked the visual effects but the story was just okay. I expected it to be better but I wasn't really disappointed. I really liked the ending and the female lead kepte watching , just beautiful. I certainly believe this could have been a better movie but I think it missed the boat by 20 or more years. If this came out in the 80' or early 90's it would have been received better. Overall I say it was a 5 out of 10 for me. I won't buy the DVD or watch it again.

It was an ok movie not great. I expected more from it but probably because I read all the books as a kid and had my own mind of how things looked.
