What Shadroch said. Having now basically sold off my entire collection twice - once in 2005, and again (13,000 books) this summer, I'd much rather have 200 comics I loved that were all uber high-quality, than 80% of the bulk.

 

That said, the most I've ever paid for a comic was $2,700 & I get queasy spending anything over $700 on a single issue. So that $4,000 copy of FF # 1 or Hulk 1 probably won't be making its way to my place anytime soon...

With respect to your friend, judging from the picture, sounds like a fire hazard, hoarding problem waiting to happen. I see stacks and piles all over the place.
