Endgame (Batman #40) is indeed a precursor of things to come in the future of the franchise. The last issue showed Batman getting crushed under a mountain of debris during his struggle with the Joker. The Joker did die, but Bruce Wayne had to die with him, too.

Loved the Endgame arc, and the content of Divergence #1 is relevant to this topic. It concludes #40 and reveals what is mentioned in the article.
