TOP 10 STAR WARS ISSUES

56 posts in this topic

#33 in CGC 9.8. Not sure where it is today but historically this was the lowest 9.8 census issue in that 1-107 entire run. There has only be one on ebay in months and it sold for a $300 BIN back in December last year. A seller could pretty much name the price on this one.

The other hardest 9.8 or in demand slab would be Annual #2. Might see one or two of these in an entire year. The last one sold for a little under $500.

I so wish I had been able to buy the last #33 in CGC 9.8 last December. Every #33 I have submitted since 2008 has ended up being 9.6 or 9.4. Almost every direct market copy I find has small puncture marks near the bottom staple.

In terms of problem issues, I could list a handful of them. Annual #2 and #3 took me years to find in 9.8. There are a few other issues that I am almost afraid to post about though.

The BIN on that #33 was really a great price. For the longest time the census on #33 CGC 9.8 was a couple. Out of nowhere a few years ago, someone scores incredibly 4 at one time all 9.8. Presently there are only 8 total but figure 5 of those are tied up in collections so the real available float is tiny.

Same thing on Annual #2. I do believe its census population of 7 in 9.8 is the lowest in the entire run. But again, figure 1 or 2 of those in reality could show up excluding new future subs.

There is an Annual #3 up right now on ebay along with another very hard issue to find #92 in CGC 9.8.

If we are going to talk about issues that should be in high demand and the top 10 Star Wars comics, that would be a different list entirely than what I posted:

Star Wars #1 (1st Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader)

Star Wars #2 (1st Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Ben Kenobi)

Star Wars #7 (the first EU tale)

Star Wars #38 (a terrific story)

Star Wars #50 (a terrific story)

Star Wars #51, 52 (the single best Star Wars story in Marvel's original run)

Star Wars #81 (*the* Boba Fett story from the original run to own; it actually features Boba Fett too!)

Marvel Illustrated Version of The Empire Strikes Back (1st Boba Fett and Yoda)

Star Wars Annual #1

Those are the best 10 comics from the original Marvel output. Unfortunately, quality doesn't come into play otherwise Annual #2, Star Wars #68, and Star Wars #100-107 wouldn't be on the list.

Runner up is:

Good lists and distinctions. I kind of missed the point in listing two of the hardest 9.8 slabs to obtain. One other slab very hard to get was #84 in CGC 9.8. This was one for years had a couple in the census and then out of the blue one popped up a few years back and sold for crazy money. This motivated folks to sub. So now there are 17 in the census but you will see maybe one of these a year pop up for sale.

Here are a couple I will suggest. SW Tales 10 is for just a What If moment and Purge is just a good story.

Star Wars Tales 10 Vader vs Maul

Star Wars Purge

You mean Star Wars Tales #9 with the Vader versus Maul story? :baiting:

I think the information concerning which Star Wars issues are harder to find in 9.8 grade is interesting. Knowing the Marvel Star Wars title always sold well with the exception of the very end of the run, I find it fascinating any early issue is hard to find in 9.8.

As for my top 10 Star Wars comics (not by demand), in my blog, I just wrote a comparison piece for Star Wars #68 and Star Wars #81:

http://swcomiccollector.blogspot.com/2015/03/retro-marvel-star-wars-68-versus-star.html

There is also a poll for which issue is the more significant Boba Fett appearance on the home page. :)

Also, previous blog posts cover Star Wars #1, Star Wars #38, and Star Wars #51, 52:

http://swcomiccollector.blogspot.com/2015/02/retro-marvel-star-wars-38.html

http://swcomiccollector.blogspot.com/2015/02/retro-marvel-star-wars-51-and-52.html

Eventually, I'll get around to creating a post for all my top 10 Marvel Star Wars issues. There are so many Star Wars comics to discuss, I will be doing this for many, many years.

Good post on the differences between Star Wars 68 and 81. I find it funny that people still don't know that 68 really doesn't even feature Boba Fett. It is a great cover though, and when it comes to CGC copies that is usually what people care about. But the cover to 81 is just as nice, IMO.

I agree with RJRJR regarding the high grade interest in the later issues of the Marvel run.

In terms of story content, Marvel Star Wars issues #103 to #107 were weak. I would argue that #107 suffers the most due to it being used to compress the Nagai / Tof story down so much for the purposes of forcing closure for one last issue. I recall reading along time ago that Mary Jo Duffy wanted the Nagai / Tof story to be a lot more grand than it was. I even heard that she would have re-written 107 into a several part story if given the chance to do so.

Although I was not a big fan of the Nagai / Tof story, the Nagai actually made appearances in Star Wars: Legacy (from Dark Horse) years later. This is kind of like how the Wheel from Marvel Star Wars #18 made an appearance in Star Wars: Republic (also from Dark Horse) years later.

I think both OV and RJRJR made good lists of high demand issues. I would argue that both Marvel Star Wars #92 and #98 should be part of the list. Both issues have near black covers - which lead to problems for high grade collectors. Both covers appeal to Bill Sienkiewicz fans (who also drew the cover for #101 and the Return of the Jedi issues). Both books have artwork from people who illustrated more well known Star Wars books. #92 includes the 1st Star Wars art from Jan Duursema (most well known for Republic, Legacy and Dawn of the Jedi). #98 is drawn by Al Williamson (i.e. Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi adaptations and the newspaper comic strip).

Other issues that I really like - but may not be in as high of demand include:

#38 - Riders in the Void - this issue was drawn by Michael Golden and written by Archie Goodwin. It included a bio-technology that some may speculate to have influenced the Yuuzhan Vong (from the New Jedi Order novels).

#51 / 52 - These issues included the super weapon known as the Tarkin which has some plot similarity with Return of the Jedi. To be honest, I think the whole Walt Simonson run is great though.

Marvel Illustrated Books Star Wars 1 (with the Way of the Wookiee and the Day After the Death Star! stories)

I totally agree about SW #51 / 52 being the best from the Marvel Run. It had great art / great story. I also really liked the basic idea of the new super weapon and the plot of the senior imperial officers to take down Darth.

I am also a big fan of SW #50 and #81. It's interesting that some people I have talked to over the years didn't like #81 but I liked it for even more than the Boba Fett story. It included the 1st follow up from ROTJ (I.E. from a timeline perspective) and any story with Jawas is cool from my perspective.

For favorite stories, I almost wish we could include the Shira Brie / Lumiya story that stretched over several issues. It's not one story but it was a cool conspiracy side story that eventually resulted in an early example of another character wearing life support systems / armour to substitute for Darth Vader.

It took me about four years of looking till I could track down a copy of #84 in CGC 9.8. I used to believe it was tricky because it included early art from David Mazzucchelli (famous for Batman Year One and Daredevil Born Again). However, it might be another problem book due to its black cover and being published about a year after ROTJ.

It cracks me up to think that I have had around 10 issues of Marvel Star Wars in my $10 show stock boxes (all of which are dead on 9.6 to 9.8 candidates) for around a year and a half....and I have yet to sell a single one at shows. Not even at the Eternal Con in December or the Big Apple Con where CGC was in attendance, 2 weeks ago.I actually meant to pull them aside and submit them to CGC while I was at the con but totally forgot about them.

It's a good thing that none of them sold.

I loved how they brought Shira back in this, my favorite issue in the original SW marvel run. :acclaim::cloud9: signed by artist Tom Palmer
