Dredd Sequel Is Deadd

What timing!

‘Dredd’ Co-Producer Has Harsh Words For Film’s Executive Producer

“Judge Dredd” fans went in a frenzy last week when Karl Urban, who starred in the 2013 adaptation, Dredd, told the Denver Comic Con crowd that a sequel was “…in development.“

The film’s executive producer, Adi Shankar, quickly refuted reports, stating that the report was “not true at all,” while Urban clarified his comments on Twitter: “Unfortunately a sequel is no closer to happening, options have been discussed but there is no sequel in “development.”

Twitter user Killer Kane connected with Jason Kingsley, who is not only the co-founder and CEO of Rebellion, but also the oner and publisher of 2000ad. He Also co-produced Dredd with Shanker.

This leaves a lot of questions unanswered, but the positive takeaway is that Shanker was discounting any progress, meaning that Kingsley is more optimistic about a Dreddrevival. Who will save the franchise? Netflix? They are financing a $60 million Death Note adaptation – why not back a “Judge Dredd” series?

“We really want to get more TV stuff made and movie stuff made. There’s stuff happening in the background that’s really exciting,” Kingsley told Pocket Lint last week. “We’re a long way from anything announcing, but we’re working hard on that.

“It’s got to be done right. It’s almost worse to do something and do it badly, than not at all.”

Fan Video Imagines Netflix Title Sequence for Dredd

It’s the movement that just won’t die. While 2012’s Dredd failed to make an impact at the box office, the past few years have inspired a growing legion of fans demanding for a continuation of the Karl Urban (Star Trek: Beyond) led action extravaganza. Urban himself has, at times, led the charge, expressing not only interest in reprising his role as the post-apocalyptic keeper of the law, but also an outright adoration for the character and his story. Yet whenever there’s movement towards the positive for Dredd 2, conversations seem to fizzle out before anything can be solidified.

As Screen Geek reports, YouTube user Oliver Hollingdale pieced together an imagining of what an open credits sequence for a Dredd Netflix series might look like. Using shots from the 2012 film, as well as some police radio banter also from the film, Hollingdale has created a credits sequence that captures both the feel of Dredd and the feel of other Netflix series credit sequences like Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

Come on, folks. Give it to us!

Fox Turned Down A Judge Death Dredd Movie

According to Dredd's co-creator, John Wagner, a sequel may still be happening. In an interview with ScreenGeek, he had this to say:

"Well, there will be a sequel, I just don’t know when or who’ll do it but it’ll happen.... It would work very well as a television show – it just depends on how it’s done. It could work very as a film. I mean – everyone wants to see Judge Death, don’t they?"

Later on in the interview, Wagner claimed that Judge Death was actually meant to have a leading role in the 2012 Dredd film.

"I wouldn’t mind seeing that. That was actually the first -script that Alex Garland did was a Judge Death -script but Fox, who they were dealing with at the time, turned it down. They wanted more nuts and bolts before they went into the [metaphysical]."

According to Wagner, writer Alex Garland had a much different story in mind. Fox turned it down, however, to build a stronger foundation for the character.
