James Bond XXIV: SPECTRE - "You're a kite dancing in a hurricane Mr. Bond."

Wow! And so much of the early trailers hinted at continued greatness from a long-established franchise.

:(

The action scenes are what make it great, but there needs to be a new writing and directing team stat! And once again the villain's motivations where never really made all that clear.

Agree.

Mendes seem to come up with ideas that would make for great scenes then tries to loosely tie them together to make a film. That's where both Spectre and Skyfall takes a dive. Especially the latter which imo is completely overrated and people got caught up in the 50th anniversary.

Thank you! :golfclap: I thought I was the only one who thought Skyfall is overrated.

Spectre 6.5/10

The intro is great, one long continuous shot during the day of the dead in Mexico, great opening action scene. Then it all goes down hill from there. The Sam Smith song is terrible although I like the credit sequence. Daniel Craig looks visibly older, I liked the movie until Lea Seydoux shows up. No real chemistry between the two which makes part of the movie feel too rushed in terms of character motivations.

The action is good and the fight scenes very reminescent of Casino Royale but the film suffers pacing issues, especially in the middle where I was bored.

Waltz is the weakest Blofeld since Charles Gray, not menacing at all and totally forgettable.

A decent entry into the Craig franchise but basically a hodge-podge of Bond movies that have gone before. Time for Mendes and writing staff to take a step away.

Casino Royale seems so long ago now.

Skyfall blew Casino Royale out of the water. (shrug)

Craig looked great at 47.

I am assuming Waltz is coming back, it was pretty obvious.

I guess you have people now haha

Honestly I have Skyfall as probably the 3rd best bond film of all time. Not sure what bored you with that movie.

Each to their own but I have no idea how you rate Skyfall that highly.

You are one of the only person who I met who is a James Bond fan that didn't enjoy Skyfall.

Craig is in amazing shape.....I would take him in Spectre Part 2 (which is pretty obvious the new cool scar-faced Blofeld is coming back in the next movie) at age 50 for one last battle with Blofeld.

I hear yea I expected a little bit more, but I think this movie will be better once they make Part 2, which will be Craig's last role as Bond. I am not convinced this is his last one.

Did anyone else get the "tentacle porn" vibe from the opening title sequence

Sam Smith was a horrible choice for the Bond song (I couldn't understand half of what he was singing)

The Mexico City sequence was the best part in the movie.

Spectre isn't the worst of the Craig movies, but I was expecting a better movie.

I think a different writer and director would be a good idea.

Well my wife and I saw Spectre on Saturday, and we both thought it was rather boring.

Was it the worst Bond film? No.

Was it the best Bond film? No.

It was an absolutely mediocre Bond film that will be forgettable in a couple years.

And since "Skyfall" seems to be the litmus test, both my wife and I thought Skyfall was absolutely great.

Not even close. Skyfall was good but Casino was great. The only thing that saves SPECTRE was its fantastic opening and it never gets as good as that.

Yeah, but Moonraker had a fantastic opening sequence 36 years ago, but that movie sucked pretty bad, with a lousy villian, a bland bond girl (Holly Goodhead  ), constant product placements, and terrible Noah's Ark meets Star Wars plot that could only appeal to a five-year-old (myself at the time). I don't see how having a great opening could save one of these movies?

IMO this is the best James Bond intro song of all time.

This song motivates me.

As a kid I believe this is how a man should act in real life. Not as a spy per say haha, but in terms of how one should conduct themselves generally in life.

I agree SPECTRE wasn't as good as I expected, but it still delivered on many levels on what I enjoy from a Bond movie. The intro song I actually kinda like, and IMO the Mexico City opening might be one the best action sequences in Bond cinema history. The helicopter part was intense.

The Ending:

I think Spectre is setting up part 2 with Blofeld getting that iconic scar towards the end of the movie and its obvious when Blofeld is starring at Bond walking away with that this is isnt over stare. Blofeld doesnt even looked worried he is being captured.

Did anyone see all the parts of the movie that was giving homage to the original SPECTRE? Older german lady was one haha

I thought it was pretty ho-hum when I first heard it (I was used to Duran-Duran and a-ha radio hits), but I wasn't really listening.

I always tend to rank this one at the bottom of a lot of my Bond lists, but it actually tried to break formula and give us something new. Sure, it got lost in the summer of Batman, lowest grossing Bond film of all-time and co-starred Wayne Newton. There was a lot to admire about it too. Timothy Dalton was an awesome Bond, the action was brisk, Robert Davi oozed with evil and although the Bond Babe was one of the worst actresses ever (something Soto), Carey Lowell was a pretty great equal female lead (that trailblazed for Halle Berry's and Eva Green's characters). When I originally viewed it, I though it was a bit silly "ropin'" drug dealer's planes and semi's popping wheelies, but 26 years later I appreciate the grit now that paved the way for Daniel Craig. Go figure, Moonraker got worse for me and Licence To Kill got better.

Timothy Dalton was unfortunately ahead of his time.

If he did more Bond films he would probably have been the #2 James Bond of all time over Craig. Craig is a good Bond and benefiting from today's audience being smart and wanting a true Bond and not a campy or corporate Bond. (Moore & Brosnan)

Spectre director Sam Mendes confirms he is done with 007 and explains why

"The pronouncements after the last movie were taken seriously and I then had to undo them when I agreed to make this movie. Without giving too much away, the difference here for me is, this movie draws together all four of Daniel’s movies into one final story, and he completes a journey. That wasn’t the case last time. There is a sense of completeness that wasn’t there at the end of Skyfall, and that’s what makes this feel different. It feels like there’s a rightness to it, that I have finished a journey. I’m not talking about Daniel here because Daniel may absolutely turn around six months’ time and feel his energy renewed. Or he might say just the opposite. If he is as sensible as I think he is, he needs to go away and have some time to think and do another job that’s completely different, which he’s already doing with Othello."
