New Mutants #98 Poly bagged with watch ????

30 posts in this topic

Don’t know where the american New Mutants with the UPC box blank comes from, but this is probably a joke – reposting here what I posted in the same thread in modern:

The bag and the watch are from the italian edition of X-Force #0 (reprinting the New Mutants issues), so probably someone put a NM #98 in the bag as a joke.

X-Force #0 also came, alternatively, with pairs of fluorescent glasses.

Now please someone please alert the bidders (and the seller) that this is a $10 book at best (it appears the ones with the watch are less common than the ones with the glasses but anyway…)

It's actually legit, it is an Italian book but USA print. It was procured from an Italian collector.

I don’t understand what you mean – X-Force #0 came out as the one I pictured. It’s a 64 page book reprinting New Mutants #98-99-100. I don’t know what the picture you posted can be, as they did not issue such a thing: in the bag there is clearly an english language version of the comic, while the package is the one of X-Force #0 (the italian edition).

That’s surely the question.

The auction, however, remains misleading as it shows this english book with no UPC and actually sells an italian X-Force #0, which is a cheap book and printed with a large print run.

Oh sorry man this isn't the book in the auction, someone found that on eBay after I posted this one up. I'm not sure about the one on eBay.

I have a potential answer (also posted in the duplicate Modern thread): when they restarted publishing Marvels here, in the late 1980s, they generally avoided the graphic adaptations of covers (and even splash pages).

So, while they might have adapted the title pages, the covers reproduced inside the books did not have a graphic adaptation of the title logo (in italian), and especially after 1994 (the year they launched the Marvel Italia imprint, which then became Panini Comics later on) they reproduced the cover in the insides straight away from the originals (with blank and/or direct UPC boxes).

So, that mysterious cover could actually be simply the book X-Force #0 with the cover removed: since the first story is New Mutants #98, that might simply be page 1.

But that is just an hypothesis…
