Marker on the interior of comics

5 posts in this topic

New to the site and first time poster.

I have recently bought a collection of comics (1000) from a gentlemen that collected them when he was a child. They are mainly '76-'85 Marvel. The problem that I am seeing is that he colored in the eyes of most of the characters with red marker. There is some bleed through but it isn't horribly detracting from the reading of the comic. Others he must have gotten more bored with and decided to color in Scarlet witches outfits with a more vibrant red color which bled through a bit more.

MY QUESTION: How much does this type of defacing effect the grading of the comics?

Thanks,

Q

I wouldn't give them more worth than reader grade. They are not collectible.

I once bought a book (JIM 125) at significant discount (and I wanted simply as a filler copy) that had every character with beards/goatees/mustashes drawn in through the entire book. It is essentially a true reader grade copy even if it is solid otherwise condition wise.

it is sort of funny in a way and tragic as well. Hope you didn't pay a lot for the books.

I would check all of them out-- you might have some that escaped the felt tip pen.

and for some issues-- say if there was a stray Hulk 181 -- I bet some peeps might be willing to live with a little damage. Never know - never hurts to put it out there and see if others have interest.
