The Ultimate Dennis the Menace Thread

Earlier, I posted the Dennis books published by Character Imprints:

1978: Dennis Talks About Love Stuff

1979: Dennis the Menace Hopes That You Get Well

1979: Dennis the Menace Finds New Ways to Say Happy Birthday

1979: Dennis the Menace Sheds Some New Light on Friendship

Mentioned also were the cards and calendars published by CI. While I don't have any of the calendars - or even images of them - I do have some of the cards. I bought these from a Dennis collector named Joel who sells on eBay under the name bullmoose1. It's always a pleasure making contact with a new collector.

Here's a 78 rpm from 1960 that has the Dennis theme song and one called "Ka-Pow! Ka-Pow! Ka-Pow!" Nothing interesting on the back except an ad for Golden Records not worth scanning.

For the record (pun intended foreheadslap.gif), I've noticed almost all these old Dennis records were issued as both 45's and 78's. The one below I think is the one I sent you, Bill C:

Here's another record I saw on ebay, from 1959:

And here is the 45 version of it. I don't think I ever would have noticed this difference with the records if Allen hadn't pointed the difference out on the Christmas record back on page 65 of this thread. This record was issued in 1960.

Anybody seen this? I'm not sure how long www.dennisthemenace.com has been up, but it probably hasn't been long since it never appeared in google searches until lately. Also some of it is still under construction. The most interesting part was seeing the old panels colored. Here's the link:

DTM.COM

I love the old art, but the new coloring juxtaposed with it changes the character. At first I didn't like it, but the color really brings out the old art. Kind of cool actually. Thoughts, anyone?

Actually, Joe. This is the one you sent me, which is the one I really wanted. This one predates the CBS TV show and contains a totally different Dennis the Menace "theme song." It also features some great examples of Dennis panels on the back sleeve.

The other 45/78 should feature Jay North on vocals - giving you a vocal version of the DTM TV theme song. I didn't own that TV-show based single, I owned the album that featured songs by Jay North in character as Dennis (it featured both the songs on the single and, I think 9 or 10 others).

Good, Bill - I'm glad you got the one you wanted. In a bit here, I'll show you a cd collection that came out in the 90s that has all the old records on it.

There are a lot of these Golden Records. Here's one from 1960:

And here's yet another one that was released in both formats (78 and 45):

Here is another Dennis record, which apparently reprints three previous records all onto one disc. Since I've never listened to the records I can't say whether this is re-issuing anything except the "I Hate Spelling" record I posted earlier. I haven't owned a record player since the mid-1980s, so I can really only look at the covers. This says "1961" on the cover, but I think this was released much later and I distinctly remember having this record lying around our house in the 1970s.

Here is another "reprint" record that complies other records onto one. This one compiles the Ka-Pow record, What Am I Gonna Do Today, and I Hate Spelling:

Here's the rare JN solo album, made possible by his fame playing Dennis. This is one of the rarest of all Dennis-related collectibles. It is KEM Records LP 27. I have seen this on eBay a total of two times. I'm without a digital camera lately, so this is all that will fit in my scanner:

Now here is a better picture of this album cover. Since I posted last, one appeared on eBay, so this is a capture:

And finally, I believe this last item will be the last of all the Dennis Menace recordings. To my knowledge, I have listed all the recordings. If anyone knows of anymore, please share. This last item is the soundtrack to the 1993 film:

There were two big Dennis auctions on eBay this week. One was for one of the nicer #1's I've seen. It was billed as a fine plus and looks nice, but there is a water stain on the upper left corner. (I got a scan from the seller.) The closing price was $409.88, and it closed on December 2. To my knowledge this is the most publicly paid for a Dennis 1. Being a raw mid-grade, this gives us an idea of how high a slabbed true high grade would go for: a lot!

The other big eBay Dennis auction was for this original Al Wiseman page, which I won with one idea in mind: To give it to JRW since the companies screwed his dad out of his art and his family has none left. JRW, pm me with your address and I'll mail it to you when I get it.

Joe -

What can we say? I guess there really is a Santa Claus! 893applaud-thumb.gif

BTW on the "Dennis the Menace Songs" Album - My memory is that all the songs were voiced by Jay North. But after seeing some of the 45's that had the same selections, I'm starting to doubt my memory.

I can't read the fine print on your scan of the album cover. Does it credit the vocalist(s)?

Bill, to the best of my knowledge, Jay North never sang on the Dennis records. As a kid, I had many of these records, and I had always thought it was Jay singing since he often sang on the tv show - and clearly had his own records - but Philip Fox is the kid credited with singing as Dennis in the first person. (Sorry for the poor scan, but I have to use eBay pictures for those albums since they won't fit in my scanner. I've been shopping for a digital camera since my other one busted, so I should have one again soon. )

By the way, this incredibly rare Dennis item appeared on eBay. Super Dennis collector Mark, who posted here as lansdown, has told me about this, but I had never seen it. It came up on eBay and was instantly bought with a buy-it-now. The only reason I even know is cause the buyer, Sam, emailed me, which I'm grateful for, cause now I can finally see what this thing looks like! It is the Dennis the Menace Dentist Kit from Pressman:
