Encroaching on your commission theme

40 posts in this topic

I'm sure you guys have discussed this before, but it's the first time I've had it happen (actually it may be the second, Greg Land may have co-opted it for a cover). How do you feel when someone has a piece done with the same or similar theme that you've spent years cultivating? At this point I'm 38 pieces (with several more on the way) into my "Iron" Throne theme, so I've done the work to establish it.

Now someone else has come along and done a similar piece, using an artist that has already done one for me!

I realize we as collectors don't own the these characters and the artists own the reproduction rights to their work, but this spark of inspiration was mine. So do you feel flattered that someone thought enough of it to somewhat copy it? Upset that it happened? And while it isn't an exact copy since there's no Iron Man armor, should I feel that it's cheapening my own theme?

Especially since Chris Stevens already did it better (with no offense to Ramon).

Looks like someone else has claimed your "Iron" throne. Hahaha!

He probably saw your stuff, got jealous, and decided to do the same thing. It's a good thing to have a copycat.

Isn't your theme based on a throne made from Iron Man's armor though? Unless I'm missing it, I don't see any Iron Man armor on the commission you linked. Just a bunch of guns to create a "throne". I don't think it's reasonable to expect that that no one can have a commission done of a character sitting on a throne. That's been done before. Now if the throne was made of Iron Man armor, that would be a different story as it was clearly your idea and theme.

That Chris Stevens piece you posted is insanely good btw!

No, you're not missing it. Like I said above, my throne pieces are made up of Iron Man's armor, so it isn't a direct swipe of the theme, but I do feel it kind of cheapens it in a sense.

And thanks for the kind words. Chris really delivered on that piece. An amazing talent.

I had thrones first!!

Just kidding. As a fellow themed commission collector I can see where this might bother you.

I didn't create the idea of a trophy wall. There are published examples in comics going back to, at least, the 50's. I did, however, bring them to the world of commissions. There have been probably 9-10 people that actually emailed me, saying they had an idea for their own, and wanting to know if I was cool with them doing one. It was totally unnecessary for them to ask permission but it was a cool thing to do. I would never say no. The deference was really nice to see.

A couple of guys went and did it without asking, that's their call, but a bunch of folks I know that follow my theme called them out on it. The worst thing to be in commission collecting is unoriginal. lol

At this point when I see a published piece that matches my theme I just smile.

I am usually glad that someone likes the idea enough to ape it.

Very good points, Chris. Thanks! (thumbs u

They say Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

It is kind of like the different comic companies taking this or that from their competitors to come up with a "new" character or team. It appears that you came up with an idea that someone else wants to tweak a bit and make his own. I’d just roll with it.

You're also assuming the commission saw your CAF and specifically asked for an Iron Throne--isn't it almost as likely the artist saw your theme and was inspired by it, or even simply came up with the idea on his own?

I also took a quick look and didn't see any other similar pieces, so I don't think he's trying to coop your theme.

You're right, I don't know that the commissioner had or hadn't seen my theme on CAF. He may just be a fellow GOTs fan who was inspired by several of the HBO throne memes that have popped up.

Do I know that the artist is familiar with it, yes, he has done one of my "Iron" Throne pieces, but hey, more money for Ramon, that's always good thing.

I think you're making too much of this example.

Aside from that, there is nothing new under the sun. As long as you enjoy your art, why concern yourself with anyone else? I'm not a theme collector, although I've thought about it, but I can't see how someone else enjoying a similar idea would take away fro my fun and enjoyment.

As long as no one copies my "One minute later, on a golem, in the trophy room" theme I don't care what they do :shy:

Does this include porn versions?

I thought porn was implied by the title "one minute later, on a golem, in the trophy room". That or he's starting a new version of Clue.

"Mr. Mustard" will make an appearance, and then not, and then again
