How has no one mentioned Bill Willingham's Elementals? Or, God help us, Penthouse Comix?

 

This is Silver Age specific, and presumably mainstream oriented, as plenty of undergrounds produced during the time had graphic sex in them.

From the looks of things you'll have to read "The Dummy and the Damsel"

 

I pulled that book out and read it, planning on putting the answer up here for 01TheDude - spoilered of course. But after reading it, I'd have to say, yeah, you need to read it if you want to know.
