Johnny Depp & Edgar Wright Teaming Up For Neil Gaiman's Fortunately, The Milk

According to The Hollywood Reporter, 20th Century Fox is in early talks to acquire Fortunately, The Milk, which will be a film based on the children's book of the same name written by Newbery Medalist and Hugo Award-winner Neil Gaiman (Sandman).

What makes Fortunately, The Milk so enticing is that filmmaker Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) and Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean, Black Mass) are part of the package. Depp will star and produce (with Animal Logic Entertainment), while Wright will direct. The film will be a blend of live-action and animation.

Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie has been brought on board to pen the -script.

Between Sandman being in movie development, Starz's American Gods in the works, and now Neverwhere becoming a TV series, Gaiman is on fire more than ever!

Johnny Depp May Star in Edgar Wright Adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Fortunately, the Milk

Sure, Neil Gaiman has written quality fantasy fiction (Anansi Boys) and comics (Sandman), but he’s at his very best when writing for a young audience. Gaiman is at the height of his powers when writing for children, as evidenced in Coraline, The Graveyard Book, and more recently, Fortunately, the Milk. Now, director Edgar Wright and Johnny Depp are in talks to help bring the sillyfunnyweird adventure to the big screen!

Fortunately, the Milk is the story of a dad telling his two children about the adventure he goes on when embarking on the seemingly simple task of buying milk. Back when it was published in 2013, Gaiman described the book on his blog as “the silliest book I have ever written, and is quite funny also.” There’s no word yet on whether Gaiman himself will be adapting the book for the screen, Wright will be taking it on, or if there’ll be another writer. Depp, obviously, is in talks to play the lead dad character. The story involves time travel, aliens, piranhas, and pirates, so I’m kind of imagining a movie about Captain Jack Sparrow taking a trip to the store.
