Price Check: 2000 A.D. cover

Found an early Carlos Ezquerra cover in a stack of stuff that I literally forgot about for maybe fifteen years? Yeah. I know. Anyway, it's not for sale -and that's why I'm being a bit vague- but I'm wondering at present value or at least a range. It's early (first couple hundred progs) and is not Dredd. Great condition, all paste-ups etc, no damage or stains. thanks!

Dale Jackson, a UK collector on CAF, collects this type of art. Shoot him a mesage of inquiry (ensuring you state that it's not for sale!).

Sounds cool, but why the vagueness?

Anyway, alxjhnsn will be here shortly to help you with market data. :insane:

It is cool, which I why i grabbed it at the time for around 300-500 iirc? (Can't even remember if that number was dollars or pounds...so who knows, but it sure wasn't anywhere near $1k usd. That I would remember.) That was the going price at the time and there were a lot of them on the market. No Dredds iirc, but mountains of covers with the other features.

My collection is private; a mystery. Sometimes even to me :) Keeps it more fun that way and don't have to deal with unsolicited offers or security concerns.

I seem to have developed a reputation. Not sure that's a good thing, but ... :)

Here's my standard response to this question; it takes the teach a man how to fish approach.

--------------

You might want to explore the following resources:

  • The OA auction archive at Heritage Auctions - This archive presents the results from all of their OA auctions.. Once you sign-up and get an id, you can search for pieces by your artist and see what they have sold for.
  • The CAF Market Data - More auction results (more than 1,000,000) are available if you join the Comic Art Fans site, pay for Market Data access, and access eBay and other auction sites as well as Heritage.
  • The Comic Art Database. It contains transaction records entered by the owners of Comic OA.
  • Dealer sites. Dealers, generally, post their art with fixed prices though there are exceptions. There is a list of dealers on CGC OA board and the Dragonberry site has a list as well. The CAF site will search the inventories of several dealers for you.
  • Blouin Art Info which tracks sales at major art auctions. It can turn up some Comic OA as well. Look for the “Art Prices” item on the top right of the screen
  • Jerry Weist's Comic Art Price Guide - Heritage published a third edition of it. In my opinion, it's a good history book and might be useful for comparison work, but it was out of date a year before it was printed.
  • A topic on these CGC OA boards, A-level panel page valuations by artist/run - thoughts/additions/changes?, holds a discussion that relates to your question. It provides some "generally agreed upon" ranges for popular runs by popular artists on popular characters.
  • The Biggest OA Prices thread tracked some of the largest sales in the OA space. While that particular thread has stopped; it's probably worth reading for the discussions. Meanwhile , the information is still being updated - just with a different mechanism.

New buyers and sellers often find that OA is too hard to price. I agree. However, I think that there is a valid reason. Each piece is unique. Uniqueness make art sales generally and OA specifically non-linear.

For example,

  • Consecutive pages could and do sell for radically different amounts.
  • Take page layout - In general, you might say:
    Covers > 1st Page Splash > Other Splash > 1/2 splash > panel pages
However, that's not always true either. The right panel page can be much more compelling than a bland splash.
  • Take pencillers- There are "A-list" artists, but not all of their books/characters have the same value. Kirby FF pages generally go for more than JIM/Thor pages which go for more than Cap pages (2nd run) which go for more than ...
  • Take combinations of pencilers/inkers - Kirby/Sinnott FF pages rank above Kirby and anyone else on FF, but a Kirby/X FF page might be more or less than a Kirby/Stone Thor page. Hard to tell.

Finally, you should join the comic book OA community. The three main points of Internet contact are:

The main points of physical contact are probably:

One last comment, if you are looking to buy or sell, spend the time to learn the market. That might take 6 months, but it's worth the time.

Well you're just lucky that this hobby isn't a visual medium.

Aw man seriously? Alex they were joshing you but I thought you got the joke. 2000 AD covers don't have the same transparency stateside as they do in the UK (and public records are hardly voluminous regardless), that's the only reason I'm asking: specifically want to hear educated answers from specialists. Otherwise I'm as tight on the general comic art market as any of the usual players...did not the endless banter (often financial) of my posts not clue you in to that? I mean, I appreciate the effort and it may do somebody else reading this some good, but...

Somebody please put some numbers up. Please :) :) :)

Right. Cuz nobody can work with what I provided? C'mon!

"Hey I have this original piece of art and I want a value estimate, you can't see it, I can only tell you what's NOT on it, and that it's from a period of time stretching over roughly 200 issues....so how much is it worth?"

Put any comic title into the above statement and do you really think anyone has enough to work with?

C'Mon! lol

Horse-sht. I gave you the artist, and it's an anthology title where the price stratification for character is DREDD and everyone else. Now Chris if you're carrying a grudge over here from another thread or something...okay, sure...but if not, how about you help instead of hinder? Hmmm??

So digging around a bit, I'll also add these points:

1. front cover only, not wraparound

2. b/w line work, not painted or watercolor

I'm not carrying a grudge. I don't know you from Adam.

If you ask pretty much anyone in the hobby I might be the most helpful guy you'd ever meet. I've lost track of the number of new collectors I've helped guide, the number of seasoned collectors who've needed a sounding board for their potential bids, trades and purchases, and the number of honest questions I've helped answer.

What most people here don't have time for is someone who trusts the members of this board to give a value estimate on a piece but doesn't trust them enough to tell them what piece they are supposed to be valuing. It's a have your cake and eat it too scenario. Attempting to absorb the value of our collective experience without being willing to share basic information. You aren't going to get an educated and earnest response with all the (unnecessary and frankly silly) cloak and dagger antics.

You could have just as easily said you were considering a piece, shown it to us, and gotten several educated and well thought out replies and no one would have known it was part of the deep dark national secret that is your collection.

If you're looking to eliminate the biggest hindrance to getting the answer you seek then, well, Physician, Heal Thyself!

Chris is right

2000 AD stretched for almost 2000 issues and continues on

It makes a huge difference who the artist is

Carlos is well respected but did a lot of covers, there are others who are rarer

Dredd is key

Other characters less so, some are of little to zero interest (like Amazing Fantasy 14)

Most covers were not wrap around, the early ones were rarely in color, so again the info does not narrow it down.

But Carlos covers can be anything from 2K to 5-6K really depending on what they are , maybe higher but in that range. McMahon - MUCH more sought after just sold for 8.8 ish on Clink - but again they are in much higher demand. (I have a bunch of Carlos covers but no McMahon)

Be aware that the main reference points for 'price' that will be given are dealers - so you know where their advise will lead - this is what I will pay, then I will flip it.

The reason for them thar silly antics (your opinion, of course!) was I did not want to get into begging off the buy offers. Which is exactly what happened anyway. But at least Joe's interest was both educated and earnest. So I guess you were right. But also wrong. Feel better?

If having that broad of a range was helpful to you, then, mission accomplished.
