Bosco685
DC Comics' 'Scalped' Among WGN America's Pilot Orders The cable network home to 'Outsiders' has also picked up another drama pilot. WGN America, fresh off canceling critical darling Manhattan, has picked up two new drama pilots, including a DC Comics adaptation. Ordered to pilot are DC's Scalped, with Geoff Johns attached, and Roadside Picnic, based on the novel by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Scalped is described as a modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American Indian reservation. It explores power, loyalty and spirituality in a community led by the ambitious chief Lincoln Red Crow as he reckons with Dashiell Bad Horse, who has returned home after years away from the reservation. Banshee's Doug Jung will pen the -script and executive produce the DC Comics series originally written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by R.M. Guéra. DC Entertainment creative director Johns is attached to exec produce the drama, which hails from Warner Horizon Television. Insiders say WGN America is eyeing an all Native American cast. Beige
Well Banshee was brilliant - and seeing Banshee is home to an Indian Casino, Scalped seems to be in safe hands. Great comic, very similar to Banshee in some ways (violent, heaps of sex) but features a lot of drugs whereas Banshee did not. A very promising start. I need to watch the last season. The final fight between Nola and Burton was one heck of a bloodbath.
Bosco685
Star Trek Beyond's Doug Jung Working on SCALPED “Star Trek Beyond” scribe Doug Jung was by no means a newbie to writing, but approaching the iconic series was certainly a challenge, he relates. Moviehole got a chance to learn more when Jung spoke about hanging out with co-writer Simon Pegg, his admiration of Sulu and whether the new alien Jayla kisses James T. Kirk or not. Moviehole: Upcoming projects? DJ: Developing “Scalped” (television pilot for WGN America) – a really great graphic novel and the author is a big comic book writer (Jason Aaron). He did this series based on real issues and places. It’s in a world where it’s hard to come by in – to do a show set on an Indian reservation with a Native American cast, you haven’t seen that before. Bosco685
Scalped TV Series Casts Suicide Squad Actor in Lead Role The celebrated Vertigo Comics series has been mired in development since at least 2014, with WGN America having ordered a TV pilot in 2016 from DC president and executive producer Geoff Johns and Star Trek: Beyond screenwriter Doug Jung. After nearly a year, the pilot finally found its directors in Belgian team Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi (the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop 4). News of the pilot’s helmers was quickly followed by the project’s first announced casting, with Native American actress Lily Gladstone set to play the role of Carol Red Crow. Now, The Tracking Board reports that Scalped has found its leading man, with Alex Meraz taking the role of Dashiell Bad Horse. Alex Meraz was previously seen in a small role in last year’s Suicide Squad as a SEAL Team member and has appeared as a werewolf in The Twilight Saga: New Moon as well as in Terence Malick’s The New World. He is also a Native American descendant of the Purepecha (Tarasco) Nation.
Bosco685
Looks like a few announcements came out in February. Feels like they are moving fast now to pull this together. ‘Scalped’: Bilall Fallah & Adil El Arbi To Direct WGN America Pilot Quote Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi, the Belgian writer-directing duo best known for their edgy drama Black, which won the Discovery Award at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival last year, are set to direct WGN America’s drama pilot Scalped. The project, which will feature a predominantly Native American cast, was written by Doug Jung (Banshee) based on the DC graphic novel series written by Jason Aaron and illustrated by R.M. Guéra. ‘Certain Women’ Breakout Lily Gladstone to Star in WGN America’s DC Comics Pilot ‘Scalped’ Quote Casting has officially begun on the project that was ordered to pilot nearly a year ago — Lily Gladstone has landed the first series regular role, Variety has learned exclusively. Based on the western crime comics that were published by DC’s Vertigo imprint in 2007, “Scalped” is described as a modern-day crime story set in the world of a Native American reservation. The project explores power, loyalty, and spirituality in a community led by the ambitious Chief Lincoln Red Crow as he reckons with Dashiell Bad Horse, who has returned home after years away from the reservation. Gladstone will play Carol Red Crow, the estranged daughter of Chief Red Crow. Edited February 19, 2017 by Bosco685
Bosco685
Scalped Comic Book TV Pilot Begins Production Quote Back in 2014, WGN first announced plans to bring the comic to life. It wasn’t until a year ago, however, that the Scalped pilot began moving forward with executive producers Geoff Johns and Doug Jung in tow. From there, it took until early this year for the directors to be announced, quickly followed by the casting of leads Bad Horse and Carol Red Crow. Now that the principal cast and crew have been assembled, the work of bringing the pilot to life has finally begun. Aaron, also known for his work on Marvel’s Thor and Doctor Strange comics, posted an image to his Twitter of the Scalped logo on a set of cast and crew chairs. With it, he signaled that production for the pilot is now underway. As a creator, it’s likely a surreal experience to see his work brought to life. There’s no word on whether Aaron or Guéra will be involved in the project, but hopefully Johns will value their input seeing as he’s a DC creative himself. Bosco685
Report: WGN's SCALPED Might Be Moving To A New Network Quote WGN America's live-action Scalped recently completed filming of its pilot, but the show could end up jumping to another network, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This news comes as WGN America's parent company Tribune Media was tentatively acquired in a $3.9 purchase by Sincliar Broadcast Group. THR cites unnamed sources saying that Warner Bros. Television, who is producing the Scalped show, is "exploring other potential homes for the adaptation." In April WGN cancelled Outsiders despite earning the highest rated quarter in the network's history. At the time, CEO Peter Kern said the move was to reallocate resources "to a more diverse programming strategy". "It's a complete pause at WGN America," an unnamed source told THR. "It's unclear if they'll still have scripted there. I had something being shopped there, and talks suddenly just stalled. They're figuring out what they're going to do and if they even continue on with scripted."
Bosco685
WGN Passes On SCALPED Television Series Quote WGN has passed on Warner Bros.'s live-action Scalped television series following a review of the pilot, according to co-creator Jason Aaron. The Scalped pilot was filmed this past spring, with Alex Meraz as Dashiell "Dash" Bad Horse, Lily Gladstone as Carol Red Crow, and Gil Birmingham as Chief Lincoln Red Crow. Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi directed the pilot. WGN optioned the series in 2015, with Geoff Johns as a producer. "I got to visit the set while they were filming the pilot, and got to hang out with everyone. I was very impressed with the cast," the writer says. "It had an incredible cast, and I was excited to see them all dig into the characters. When I was told WGN passed, I was mostly disappointed for them." The apparent decision comes as WGN's parent company is being acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group. Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley has said their plans are for WGN to be "shifting its strategy away from high-cost originals into more cost-effective originals and reruns.” Earlier this year, the network cancelled its two primary live-action dramas (Outsiders and Underground). When asked if DC is shopping the Scalped pilot around to other networks, Aaron said he couldn't speak on that and referred back to DC.
▫️
That is very unfortunate, I enjoyed the comics. Maybe one of the big three cable companies will realize there is a great story there.
