Capitol Collectibles Announces Two More Washington DC Comic-Con Shows for 2005

Washington, DC - Capitol Collectibles is pleased to announce two additional dates for the Washington DC Comic-Con schedule this year: May 29th and October 30th. Last year at Capitol Collectibles, we decided to bring back comic book conventions to our Nation's Capital. As best we could tell, there had not been a comic book convention in the District of Columbia in at least 20 years (and most likely thirty). All previous area shows were outside of the city and required a car to attend; we were looking to bring comics back into the city and to those fans that rely on public transportation (just like Boston and New York).

We decided, in our infinite wisdom, to have our first show on January 30th. We worked hard to bring in some great guest artists and get the word out. Unfortunately, snow brings our fair Capital to a standstill and as luck would have it, snow arrived the night before and continued during the day of the show. We thought we'd end up spending the entire day hanging out with our invited guests and all five fans who would brave the snow (that doesn't sound so bad now). Luckily for us, despite the weather, nearly 500 people attended our January 30th Washington DC Comic-Con. While a few of our guest artists and venders were unable to attend due to the weather, Frank Brunner, Michael Kaluta, and John Snyder III were all in attendance and busy with fans and sketch requests well beyond our 5:00 PM closing time and all of our vendors said they were extremely pleased with the show. So we ended up having a great reception for our inaugural show and decided to add two more dates to this year's Washington DC Comic-Con schedule (in warmer weather this time).

The next Washington DC Comic-Con will be held from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, May 29th, at the Marriott at Metro Center in the heart of downtown Washington. There will be platinum, gold, silver, bronze and modern age comic books, toys, t-shirts, non-sports cards, DVD's, original art, and much more. Our guest list includes Rich Buckler Sr. and John Snyder III, with more to be announced. All of this is easily accessible via Metro and there will be plenty of free street parking. Admission is only $5 (with flyer) and children under 12 are free.

Capitol Collectibles, owned and operated by Joe Esparza and Jamie Jonker, is headquartered in the heart of our Nation's Capital. Capitol Collectibles is an eBay™ Power Seller™ (eBay id: capitolcomics) with an eclectic collection of gold, silver, bronze, and modern comics and original comic art. Capitol Collectibles maintains an active comic book convention schedule exhibiting throughout the Middle Atlantic states and is proud to be the sponsor of the Washington DC Comic-Con, the only comic book convention held in Washington, DC.

Not to be a , but why are you having a show in downtown DC, especially on Memorial Day weekend? frustrated.gif 95% of your audience lives in the burbs, and that can't possibly be a good weekend to have a show, especially downtown. I'll be there, but I hope you reconsider, at least have it in Georgetown so you get walk-by traffic.

Actually, about 80% of the 500 attendees at our January show were from within the District and not among the usual attendees at other local shows in the suburbs. The DC market is distinct from NOVA or MD suburbs in that most of the attendees rely on public transportation (aka Metro) to attend. This precludes locating the show in Georgetown.

Cool, I still should be in town on business and will more than likely be able to check out your show.

The only store I have been to so far in this town (one in Georgetown) didn't have any back issues. Is that the case for most/all stores in DC? Any store recommendations from the locals?

Best place that's somewhat local (re: Maryland) is Mark Nathan's store, Cards, Comics, and Collectibles in Reisterstown. Only store in the DC area with a large back issue stock. Beyond Comics (in Gaithersburg, but same guys as G'town) are my LCS. They have just about everything you could want as far as new material, but back issues are sorely lacking.

Big Planet (at least the last time I visited) had more than Beyond, but nothing in the HG realm.

There was a store in Rockville (Adventure Comics) that shut down a few months back. He had a pretty good back issue selection (for Copper and up). Wonder what happened to him? confused-smiley-013.gif Paging Rich Henn....have you heard from John (Adventure Comics)?

Thanks guys. I was in Beyond Comics 2 in G-town near my hotel. Probably one of the smallest comics shops I've been in. The burbs are tough for me to get to without a car, I was thinking mainly cab-accessible locales. Thanks for the info though, kind of confirmed what I was assuming.
