OS 35 prices for low grade Spideys...what gives?

30 posts in this topic

Blob, once again, I have to ask: ASM 28 in VG now guides at $126.

Is anyone, anywhere selling VG 28s for such a price?

And that said, I much agree about the color touch problem on ASM 28s. Won a F- last year from Showcase NE at a very low price, & book looked sharp in the scans, but once the book arrived & was in my hands, could see color touch on the spine right away...

I got a GVG ASM 28 for about $25-$30 last year.

It was part of a lot so it's always hard to figure the exact amout for each comic.

here's a raw one that got $147 that would likely be given a VG if graded by CGC (yes, the seller has it as a F/VF, but the scan is such that an educated consumer can come to their own conclusions):

here's a VG or less from neatstuff that got $130:

$103 for another VGish copy:

$147 for another copy that is likely a VG (though given a higher grade by the seller):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=32739&item=6523378646&rd=1

$122+ for a copy called a VG by the seller:

On the other hand, there are plenty of auctions where it goes for well under guide. I don't really understand these results given

Most of the copies selling in the $30-$50 range look more like "goods" although there do seem to be some selling for well under guide that could be VGs or better and a CGC 5.5 or so only barely cracked $100.

sorry i killed this thread. personally, i was shocked that so many raw VGish copies (at least based on their scans/photos) of 28 had sold for at or around guide in the last 30 days. i had figured to maybe see a decent number at 50%, but not so many at guidish.

You're right then, Blob, prices here are all over the map with some #28s finishing around Guide...although taking a look at the cross-section of auctions you posted above, I'd venture a guess that most of the buyers are hoping to receive a #28 that's actually better than VG (& the scan sizes are all over the place, which likely helps the eye appeal of the cover in most cases). Some of these look like real gambles to me given the $$ they are going for, but that's the fun of ebay I guess! Very interesting.

with this particular book, spine creases are severely magnified and, in my mind at least, make many of these books definite "VG" candidates for CGC, even if their owners think they're better.

granted, i haven't bought silver age slabs lately, but when I was buying them frequently 3-4 years ago CGC was being pretty strict on these VG to Fine books. I definetely have 5.0s that are far better than most of the ASM 28s I posted. maybe cgc has gotten more liberal in its grading?

I attended Paradise Convention in Toronto last weekend and picked up a #18 in good or better for $25 (American) and 25 in good for $17 Am. I also picked up two issues in the 80's for $12 Am. total. I found those prices to be reasonable and in line with what they are selling for on ebay. I am continuing to save for a number one. I was advised that I should get #1 asap because it will go up disproportionately to the other early issues.

Did they have a 21 and 22 in GVG for ~ 25 @?
