Tell me about it!

It was at $600 for awhile and I thought I'd have a shot at it. :sorry: Oh well, the hunt goes on!

$2,225.. must of been the white pages which gave it the premium.

Funny how life goes sometimes. I was bummed about missing out on this book (WM #5) since I picked up the Weird Mysteries #4 from this same collection. I thought the two would make a great set. It turns out that the final bidder bailed on the win and the book was going to be put back up. The seller and I have been corresponding and when I found out this book was available again, we agreed on a deal for it. I didn't have to pay the final original price but man was it pricey! That said, after the book arrived I realized that the date stamp on the cover is one day before my twins' birthday!! Pretty cool considering that the Weird Mysteries #4 from the same collection sports a birthday stamp of an Aunt. Now that's a Weird Mystery! lol

Anyway, The WM #5 has everything I could ask for in a midgrade copy.. bought directly from original owner, significant date stamp, and white pages... :cloud9: Can't wait to crack these books out and finally read those Wolverton stories!!

Interesting.

That price made me feel a LOT better about what I just forked over for my 6.0 Weird Mysteries 5.

Killer books, your copy of 5 has great eye appeal.

Enjoy the beans :baiting:

You think I can afford beans after this book? lol Nah... I'm eating boiled copies of 1990's comics.....They ain't too bad with some mustard.... as soon as I can save up for a jar. :P

Thanks Jayman and Matthew! Like you said, these are two biggies for the collection and it does seem like I have been on a rampage lately. This narrows down my list of Key PreCode horror books though and I've really been trying to focus on just the keys for awhile now. About a year ago I created a list of my personal favorite covers and decided to go after those. I'm planning to do a post in this thread when the list is completed showing my top 25!

Recent pick-up from Cimm that I'm very happy with: WoM #1 :)

Nice book Jayman!

I've really become a fan of these ACE precodes. Not only do you get a nice Lou Cameron story once in awhile, there are also plenty of other great artists I haven't seen before. It's always cool seeing a fresh approach on how to draw a horror comic.

I got mine yesterday and I can't keep from going back to it. One of the more enjoyable collections in a long time. Can't wait to see what the Frankie looks like.

Amazon Linky - Four Color Fear - Forgotten Horror

A massive collection of never-before-collected pre-Comics Code horror comics of the 1950s. Of the myriad genres comic books ventured into during its golden age, none was as controversial as or came at a greater cost than horror; the public outrage it incited almost destroyed the entire industry. Yet before the watchdog groups and Congress could intercede, horror books were flying off the newsstands. During its peak period (1951-54) over fifty titles appeared each month. Apparently there was something perversely irresistible about these graphic excursions into our dark side, and Four Color Fear collects the finest of these into a single robust and affordable volume.

EC is the comic book company most fans associate with horror; its complete line has been reprinted numerous times, and deservedly so. But to the average reader there remain unseen quite a batch of genuinely disturbing, compulsive, imaginative, at times even touching, horror stories presented from a variety of visions and perspectives, many of which at their best can stand toe to toe with EC.

All of the better horror companies are represented: Ajax-Farrell, Atlas, Avon, Charlton, Comic Media, Fawcett, Fiction House, Gilmor, Harvey, Quality, Standard, St. John, Story, Superior, Trojan, and Youthful. Artist perennials Jack Cole, Steve Ditko, George Evans, Frank Frazetta, Alex Toth, Al Williamson, Basil Wolverton, and Wallace Wood con- tribute both stories and covers, with many of the forty full-sized covers created by specialists Bernard Baily, L.B. Cole, William Eckgren, and Matt Fox.

Editors Benson and Sadowski have sifted through hundreds of rare books to cherry-pick the most compelling scripts and art, and they provide extensive background notes on the artists, writers, and companies involved in their creation. Digital restoration has been performed with subtlety and restraint, mainly to correct registration and printing errors, with every effort made to retain the flavor of the original comics, and to provide the reader the experience of finding in the attic a bound volume of the finest non-EC horror covers and stories of the pre-code era. 304 pages of color comics

I got mine yesterday. Wow. What a collection. This is required for the bookshelf of any PreCode Horror fan. Very very nice reproductions from the original comic pages themselves. The extra material is amazing too. Not only is is packed with some of the best non-EC PreCode stories, they have a sweet cover gallery, along with some footnotes and articles about the books, stories, and publishers.

In the last couple of years, I have made it my point to gather as much material on this part of comics history. This book had a lot of notes and stories I have never heard. I give it 4 eyeballs out of 4!

This book also sports a very nice cover featuring art from one of my personal favorites, "The Corpse That Came To Dinner", drawn by Reed Crandall from Standard's Out Of Shadows #9
