USMCA Canada Duty Changes 0

Although not a fan of the agreement per se, it appears the change from $20 to $150 for online shopping should help cross-border shopping for both sellers and buyers in USA/Canada.

Target date of Dec 1, 2018. It should help my comic shopping habits.

It's not as good as it sounds at first...

Most of what gets paid at the border is not duty, but HST. As I understand it, a typical $150.00 order would have been charged about $3.00 in duty and then GST/HST ranging from about $7.50 in Alberta to $19.50 in Ontario to $22.50 in Nova Scotia. Under the USMCA, the $3 duty charge disappears, but the GST/HST charge remains.

The exception is on lower value stuff... It used to be that anything under $20.00 was exempted from HST, but this has now been raised to $40.00.

All figures are in Canadian dollars, too... so the new limit is really about US$120.
