AQUAMAN #48

Origin story from Adventure Comics #260, this is the first time Aquaman’s origin appears in his own title.

Again, another really sharp book at a glance. Just a couple of tiny spine stresses. Cover inks are really nice especially considering the dark areas of the cover.

Big draw back is the impact bump to the bottom of the spine with some color breaks.

There’s also a small chip off the top edge of the back cover and last page near the corner. Also some slight bending in that area.

A press might ease out the impact and slight bending but with the chips I don’t know that this would go much higher.

VERY FINE + 8.5

AQUAMAN #47

At first glance, looks like an easy NM- 9.2, however there are several non-color breaking spine stresses.

There’s also a tiny pinch crease on the front cover just above the “U” in “AQUAMAN” title, doesn’t break color.

There’s a tiny faint spot on the upper left edge of the back cover.

Still, a very attractive book overall.

AQUAMAN #51

Neal Adams art on the Deadman back-up story which ties in with the Aquaman feature story.

A cracked-out CGC blue label 9.2 white pages. Blue label comes with the book.

Great cover wrap alignment, glossy,  rich colors. About 3-4 hairline spine stresses. Spot of black distributor ink spray to top of pages and a little bit on the back cover.

AQUAMAN #55

Man, I REALLY want call this a 9.4. Great cover wrap alighntent, flat, supple, glossy. Just a couple of tiny spine stresses.

However, there is a tough of wear to the bottom of the spine and front cover edge. A teensy 1/16” color-breaking crease to the bottom right corner.

And there’s an extremely faint 1/2” thumbnail crease along the bottom front cover edge that just barely begins to break color.

Because of that, I’m going to say this is an extremely solid

AQUAMAN #18

Aquaman and Mera wed.

Initial impression is the spine looks outstanding, no color-breaking stress marks. Book is flat and glossy, corners are pretty good too.

However, there is a 3/4” slight bend to the bottom left corner, den from the front when tilted in the light, more pronounced on the back cover.

There’s an impact mark on the lower back cover just below the “AURORA” emblem with associated bending. This runs through the book to the front cover. Looks like there’s bit of color-break on the front cover as well.

Tiny nick to the bottom edge and left edge of back cover. Very slight amount of stacking dirt on back cover.

A nice book as it stands, a press might get it a little higher.

AQUAMAN #25

A really nice, bright copy. Just a touch of wear to the spine corners, some minuscule color chipping to the bottom edge of the front cover and some very light stacking dirt to the back cover.  Just a couple of tiny color breaks to spine.

The biggest defect is the spine roll. I think this has some potential with a press.

As it stands, I’ll call it a

AQUAMAN #26

1st appearance the Huntress (no, not that Huntress) and O.G.R.E.  Aquaman tried to capitalize on the Bond craze.

Touch of wear to bottom corner of spine otherwise corners are sharp. Some spine stresses but most are non-color breaking.

Faint, thin dust/sun shadow along the top and bottom edge of the back cover. Just the slightest amount of stacking dirt to back cover.

Just like the #25 this has a spine roll as the most outstanding defect. Likewise, this has some presssing potential. Not quite as nice as the #25 but sill in the range of

AQUAMAN #37

When asked, Nick Cardy said this was his favorite issue to work on, drawing the ocean like it was Swiss cheese.

CGC blue label 8.5 off-white pages

This must been graded during CGC’s recent tight phase. Not saying it’s perfect, but I’m having a really hard time finding what justified the 8.5 grade.

No color-breaking spine stress on the front; looks like there could be some spine stress on the upper back cover.

A tiny impact ding to the outside edge of the back cover.

There’s a couple something on the bottom right of the back cover under the “AURORA” emblem - are they marks or tears? Can’t tell.

There is a chip out of the CGC holder on the bottom right front corner.

A really sharp copy.

AQUAMAN #41

CGC blue label 9.0 white pages

Again, this book must have been graded durning their super-strict phase as nothing is jumping out at me as to why this is 9.0 especially with the black cover.

I see no color-breaking spine stresses. There’s green distributor ink on the top of the pages, a hint of wear to the bottom right corner of the front cover.

Yes, a 9.0 just sold on CLink for $30-some, but that had some of the obvious stuff you would expect from a 9.0 black cover. This looks way nicer.

AQUAMAN #23

CGC yellow Signature Series label 6.0 cream to off-white pages.

Signed by Nick Cardy on 7/4/13

For better or worse, the few times I’ve done SS I’ve tried to spare the high-grade copies and use more common mid-grade issues.

Deeper spine stess and abraiding to bottom corner of spine, a few faint creases, sun/dust shadows to back cover, couple of shallow chips to outside front cover edge. Pretty much all you would expect from a fine copy.

Well, that pretty much does it for the Aquaman books.

Here’s a couple of unrelated Silver Age DC books ...

DOOM PATROL #119

At first, looks like a solid NM- at least. No real spine stresses to speak of, just a hint of wear to the black inks in the upper left corner of the book.

However, when tilted in the light, there is a ghost of a crease on the upper right front cover area just below the Comics Code stamp. It doesn’t break color but is there. There’s also age toning to the inside covers and page edges.

Sorry for no open-book pictures. The covers didn’t want to lay open on their own and I didn’t want to force it
