Help with hulk #1
0

14 posts in this topic

I recently brought a big bundle of silver age comics that someone found in the loft and have discovered a gem. I have incredible hulk issue #1 (and 4+6) but the condition is not great, I am thinking of getting it cleaned bit am not sure about cgc encasing, weather it's worth it for a poor Grade.

Some questions, how to sell buy now or bids? , rough guide price? Advice on getting it graded?

Well, first off you have the British version. Not worth as much as the normal American published copy, but can still go for a decent amount. Despite the extremely low grade it is, it’s still worth getting graded. Issues 4-6 also potentially worth it depending how low grade. I would say what’s your intention? If to resell than yeah get them graded, well maybe just issue 1. Don’t worry about pressing and cleaning the Hulk 1 as it won’t help really at all with its potential grade and could harm it more potentially. That’s my .02.

If intention is not to resell and just hold onto then grading is still fine, or just put it in a mylite with a strong back board. Either works.

Thank you for the reply, intentions to sell on. Would  getting it graded increase value much? And what kind of ball park figure am I looking at do you think?

I mean without seeing the back and not knowing if the back cover is there or without seeing all the interior pages in case one or more might be missing, as is I’d say you have a 1.0, maybe a 1.5. Could be worth still $2.5K-$3K give or take in those conditions. But yeah I’d still get it graded. Could lose hundreds selling it raw.

IMO your book grades at a FR 1.0.

On January 21 a CGC PR 0.5 which appears to be in much worse shape than yours sold for $2650.00 on eBay.

Also on January 4 a Raw PR 0.5 (as graded by the seller) sold for $4433.00

That's interesting, the raw went for more. I could possibly get 5/6k or is that pushing it?

Thank you for replying btw

Those are the standard American published copies. His is the British version. They sell go for a decent amount less most of the time with this book and other major keys. Also the raw copy was not a .5, so I imagine that was a mistake when listed by the seller. Buyers were smart enough to realize that and paid more. He did detail amateur restoration though.

So it looks like the cover is detached from the staples right? If so I’d say yeah, a 1.0 seems right.

Well, it's still attached, but there is rips around the staples, the cover is still held in place by the staples.

Gotcha, well yeah I don’t know if I agree with 1.0. Maybe worth a pressing, and could maybe get a 1.5

You dont have the US copy, it's the British (pence) copy which goes for much less. But still figures for around 2 grand.

Yea, it's so annoying, a little symbol can half the price, same press, same paper, same time, same ink. Different currency.  I've heard that pence copies were more likely to be pressed first too, then change to press us currency. So technically these are the original. But, that's the way of life 😂

The "Raw" copy even with the "Amateur Restoration" presents much nicer than the CGC graded book which is missing 1/2 the cover.

Your copy which is a "Well Loved Book" and "Worthy To Be In Any Collection" does not present that well although it is complete, however, as I have said before about other "Well Loved Books"...

Having that copy of an Original Hulk #1 is better than not having an original copy at all.

Having said that, I am not a fan of "pence" copies and as others have already stated it will probably bring less $$$, what it will actually bring is all a shoot, you could put it up for auction and hope for the best (eBay, Comic Connect) or sell it as a BIN on eBay, as a Consignment on MCS, the For Sale section on this site and wait to see if it sells.

Getting it graded will probably increase its value.
