I had heard over the years there was a remake in the works. Sounds like it may be moving forward.

In a new interview with Collider, Carnahan revealed the planned opening of his long-in-development remake of The Raid,which would star Captain America: The Winter Soldier alum Frank Grillo, saying:

 

“You meet Frank [Grillo]’s character having just rotated back from a really, really, brutal special forces operation. He’s got soft tissue damage in his hands, and his rotator cuff is blown out, and they take fluid off his knees, and the doctors basically tell him, “Listen you’re at the razor’s edge of PTSD and you need three months of just nothing, some R&R, because you’re jacked up.’ And in that space he gets the message that his brother, who he thought had been dead for four years, is actually alive and working for a very bad guy in Caracas, and in 18 hours they’re gonna kill his brother. These forces are gonna descend and murder the bad guy and murder the brother, so do you wanna go and get your brother, who you thought is dead? Do you want that opportunity? So that’s where we start.”

 

When asked how he planned to meet the expectations of the acclaimed action set pieces in Evans’ original film, Carnahan also stated:

 

“I want the entire movie to feel like the knife fight between Adam Goldberg and the German in Saving Private Ryan. Everything. In every great action film there’s always an emotional quotient that you’re dealing with… You have to have a sense of stakes. For all of the tremendous excess of those last two Matrix films, which I enjoyed the hell out of, they never really got to the tension of just Keanu Reeves trying to answer a phone at the end of the first movie. There was great pathos, there was a great sense of, ‘Is he gonna make it?’ The spectacle I think outweighs the heart and soul of it, and that’s what you have to remember is you’ve gotta have that attached.”

 

The project has taken seemingly forever to come to fruition, but Collider says Carnahan hinted that pre-production could finally start in a matter of weeks, so we may finally get to see his Raid in the near future.

The Raid is a movie that definitely doesn’t need to be remade. Not a lick of cgi and 90% real stunt work with real injuries. Watching The Raid, I cant help but cringe wondering which scene resulted in accidents putting stuntmen in the hospital. You really feel their pain. If anything, Hollywood already remade it and called it Dredd.

The Raid was written and directed by Gareth Evans and followed an elite Indonesian S.W.A.T. team as they infiltrated a high-rise building run by a ruthless drug lord. The action was non-stop and brutal so it’s clear why Hollywood is so keen to develop their own take on the franchise. The Raid remake will be set “in Philadelphia’s drug-infested ‘Badlands’ [as] an elite undercover DEA task force climb a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.” Michael Bay and XYZ Films will produce with Gareth Evans also on board as an executive producer. “We’re incredibly excited about Patrick’s unique vision for this film. It’s a distinctly original take on the material, which promises to pay great respect to the original film while also bringing a fresh approach and perspective that will set its own course in the action genre,” the producers said in a statement. In addition to directing, Patrick Hughes will also co-write the -script with James Beaufort.

The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto Film Festival and earned instant praise for its insane action sequences and turned Evans into one of the festival’s biggest stars. Sony Pictures Classics would release the film, which gained a cult fan base that would lead to a sequel The Raid 2.

 

This version is set in Philadelphia’s drug-infested “Badlands,” where an elite undercover DEA task force climbs a ladder of cartel informants to catch an elusive kingpin.

I don’t want a Hollywood version of The Raid. I want a proper The Raid 3 made in Indonesia with guys that are hard as nails. The original Raid was filmed with a camcorder and destroys hundred-million-dollar Hollywood action flicks. The actors got injured, bruised and cut and laughed it off. I want The Raid 3 more than any superhero movie coming out.

I'm excited because I have come off a big run of doing action comedies and I love that genre and I'm certainly going to be working it again in the future, but for now, I've got two projects and the other's a big action, sci-fi, horror, thriller, survival, epic movie. There are just a couple of different genres I want to step into for a while and then I'll certainly be coming back to the action comedy because it is so much fun to work in, too."

This is a movie I don’t want and yet I’ll go see it so I can troll it online when it sucks and pales in comparison to the original. Michael Bay is probably dropping a hundred million into this abomination when they could just pay the original crew of Raid 1 ten grand and supply them with a new camcorder to make The Raid 3 and it would be better than what Hollywood plans on doing with it.
