In addition to the Russo Brothers’ announcement that they’ll be producing (and possibly directing) a movie adaptation of Battle of the Planets, the siblings have also acquired the rights to the mid-80s comic Grimjack. Don’t recognize the name? Allow us to acquaint you.

Based on the graphic novel from John Ostrander and Tim Truman, this would be the big-screen debut for the First Comics / IDW character, a troubled fighter who deals with Shakespearean levels of family drama. His adventures included arena combat as a youth, magic-wielding, battles against Hell and a complicated escape from Heaven, plus clones, gatorlizards, sentient robots and more. Gimme this movie now!

Here’s the official synopsis:

Grimjack is the story of mercenary and his crew who are forced to dig into their own pasts when Grimjack’s estranged teenage daughter comes to him looking for help.  This will take them through the insane streets of Cynosure, a mysterious city where all parallel universes intersect.  There, this unlikely team fights to save not just themselves, but all the planes of existence as we know it.

Can't wait for this. I would say the Russo Brothers are at the top at directing super hero movies now.

It will be so cool if they can take it to the level of craziness that made the stories so unique. Including the wacky characters.

Joe Russo Offers Updates on Battle of the Planets, Magic: The Gathering & Grimjack

Quote

According to Collider, filmmaker Joe Russo (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame) offered a few updates on upcoming projects he and brother Anthony have in development at their AGBO production company, including the live-action adaptation of Battle of the Planets, Netflix’s animated series Magic: The Gathering, and Amazon’s series adaptation of Grimjack.

Finally, Russo says that Grimjack is also in the -script phase and the filmmaker called the -script “fantastic,” implying that the -script has been submitted to Amazon so the company can offer notes.

Grimjack, created by John Ostrander and Timothy Truman, followed John Gaunt, a sword-for-hire war veteran and his crew as they dig through their pasts after the titular mercenary’s teenage daughter comes to them for help in the pan-dimensional city entitled Cynosure. An adaptation was originally slated for the material back in 1996 with Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski set to write and direct, but plans fell through given his work on the sci-fi series. Defiance creator Kevin Murphy is currently attached to -script the adaptation for Amazon while the Russos will produce through their banner AGBO.
