Great Stories of comic book collection finds!

53 posts in this topic

they look like great finds but its a little hard to follow.

So you found this basement. You bought the entire thing or just the spideys? Amount?

Which led to (? color artwork/ child shot)?

Which somehow led to a garage? What? Which had what books? 70s DCs? Amounts/grades?

Yeah I goofed that story line :boo:

The call on the basement, in which I bought everything, led to my selling more locally, which allowed me to be introduced to the sellers of the spidey's and then the art, which led to me advertising that I was buying comics, which produced the call about the garage. And the images from inside the home which I have not yet posted today. :cloud9:

Sorry

p.s. that's my kid.....

At the time I was low on funds and had to take the money out of my savings account. I brought the books home and my wife had a fit. To prove to her that I had made a great deal, I sold them that week for $1,000. She still wasn't pleased.

To make matters worse I had gotten the phone # of the people and told them that I would be calling them to buy more comics from them. My wife refused to let me call them and purchase more books. I fought with my wife for 2 weeks trying to get her to let me buy more books from them. Her answer was a definative NO.

*****

Oh she knows how much money he made. Now, years later she realizes how stupid she was. All because I took $40 out of savings without asking her first.

**********************************

you're obviously still married to her so I have to watch it, but when she insisted that you not turn $40 into $1000 a few dozen more times was she off her medication or something? my wife is as crazy as they come, but if I can turn $40 into $1000 in a week she shuts her pie hole real quick (and then proceeds to spend a chunk of that $1000, which I won't begrudge her...)

as for your friend you gave the # to, I'm sorry, if you were introducing him to this steal of the century you were entitled to a finder's fee or a big stack of nice books free. that's only fair.

Alas, I don't have any good stories, but then again, I do a p*ss poor job of getting myself out there and hunting this stuff down.

not a comic collection, but still a nice cash infusion nonetheless.

when i used to live in a huge apartment building, let's just say that my neighbors threw out some pretty good sh*t and the guys who worked there had no idea what they would be tossing out.

well, it's early or mid august and I guess someone who is in publishing or textbooks or something must have run out of room in their apartment so what do I see in the basement about to go in the recycling bin but about 5 or 6 big boxes of college and grad school text books, mostly shrink wrapped, mostly pretty recent editions. one of the guys dealing with the garbage looks at me like I'm nuts "what do you want with those garbage books?" I make up a quick story about how I can use them at work, I don't want these guys examining the garbage too closely and snagging my keeps. (one of these guys was always suspicious about me and ebay, asking me what "treasure" I was finding in the garbage, but he was too busy looking at porn to compete with me)

needless to say, the timing could not have been better. i quickly researched them and put most of them up at $24.99 starting bids at 5 day auctions with $49.99 - $74.99 BINs. I blew them out and did very well. I think the whole shebang paid for a big chunk of a vacation. And, being in academia, other than initially being skeeved about me dragging them up from the roach infested basement, even my wife knew that newish shrink wrapped textbooks were worth something and didn't bust my chops too much.

Two stories about finding comics. Both very simular. Both happened to me.

Once while at a estate sale I was looking for comics but didn't find any. The guy was a train collector and his wife was selling all the train stuff. So I spot some train magazines and buy one randomly. Just picked one that caught my eye. No particular reason. When I got home I dropped it down on the table and spot something that slid out just a little. I open the mag and there in between the pages are 2 RAILROAD ACROSS AMERICA comics. They were like brand new. Both graded 9.6.

Another time a neighbor is throwing out old record albums. They were out in the alley garbage almost a week. Before garbage pick-up I stroll over and take a look through what albums were tossed out. A lot of it was trash as far as I'm concerned. But I spotted a Beatles Sgt. Pepper album. So I grabbed it and a few other albums and saved them from the trashman. When I slide out the Stg. Pepper record, a Four Colors Beatles Yellow Submarine comic slid out too. Complete with poster. Looks like a brand new comic. I still haven't had it graded.

You never know were people will store a comic. They don't even have to be a comic collector. The comic just has to be of the same subject of what they collect. In these cases it was trains and Beatles.
