Can a cover become detached from the staples while inside an undamaged CGC case?

I recently had a buyer on eBay purchase 2 CGC graded books and try to claim that both of them have the cover detached at 1 staple.  The books are graded a 9.0 and 9.2 and are in undamaged cases.

All the evidence points to this person being a liar but are there any legitimate instances of this happening?

Thank you for your question. The inner well and outer case will protect the book to a certain extent. Rough handling, shipping damage, or dropping a book may cause damage to the book and/or case(specifically staple detachment). When CGC receives a book for reholder, we examine the outer case and the book to determine if the book was damaged due to poor handling. In some cases, CGC must regrade a book as a reholder with the same grade is not possible. Due to the fragile nature of the contents, this is a possibility but it happens very infrequently.
