"female-fronted" is a risky proposition theses days.  No reflection on Robbie herself, she's a certified talent with genuine star appeal, a rare accreditation these days.  But the recent spate of remakes with an all female slant, have been horribly received.   It'll all be a matter of whether people see it has a positive evolution of the series, or the studio's talking down to people again.

What "recent spate"? Other than the turd Ghostbusters 2016, what others have lost money?

On this list, those that are recent with an all female slant and are remakes are: Ocean's 8 (made money), What Men Want (made money), The Hustle (made money), and American Pie (released digitally at the height of covid).

So just the turd Ghostbusters?

For more than a decade, Sean Bailey has run Disney’s animated film “reimagining” factory with quiet efficiency and superhero-sized results. His live-action “Aladdin” collected $1.1 billion at the box office, while a photorealistic “The Lion King” took in $1.7 billion. A live-action “Beauty and the Beast” delivered $1.3 billion.

Restarting the five-film “Pirates of the Caribbean” series is another priority, although nothing official has been announced. “We think we have a really good, exciting story that honors the films that have come before but also has something new to say,” Mr. Bailey said. Will the franchise’s problematic star, Johnny Depp, return as Captain Jack Sparrow? “Noncommittal at this point,” Mr. Bailey said, seemingly inching the door open.

ComicBook.com recently spoke to legendary producer Jerry Bruckheimer about his new film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and we asked about the future of a couple of his hit franchises: Top Gun and Pirates of the Caribbean. Bruckheimer pondered which of the two may return to the big screen first, and in doing so mentioned that Pirates is hitting the reset button.

"It's hard to tell. You don't know, you really don't know," Bruckheimer began. "You don't know how they come together. You just don't know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can't tell you. But we're gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don't have to wait for certain actors."

Of course, with Top Gun, Bruckheimer is referring to Tom Cruise. The iconic action star has multiple films lined up for the future, including a direct sequel to Top Gun: Maverick. So the production will likely be at the mercy of Cruise's schedule. For Pirates, all bets are off, as the team at Disney appears to be starting from scratch.

SUMMARY

  • Depp may return in Pirates of the Caribbean reboot as Jack Sparrow, a beloved character from the series.
  • The franchise has been highly successful, earning $4.5 billion at the box office with plans for more movies.
  • Producer Bruckheimer has expressed interest in bringing back Depp, hinting at a potential reunion in future projects.

Johnny Depp may return at some point in the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. Depp is known for playing the iconic Jack Sparrow, the leading protagonist of the series. The movies were inspired by the Disneyland attraction and eventually exploded into a five-movie series that has performed well at the box office. It has earned approximately $4.5 billion and is expected to continue with another movie and a Margot Robbie-led spin-off. Margot Robbie's work will be a continuation of the story, while the sixth movie is expected to be a complete reboot.

While Depp is unlikely to star in the reboot, there is still a chance that he could appear and potentially reprise his role. When questioned by Entertainment Tonight, producer Jerry Bruckheimer explained that there is still an opportunity for Depp to appear, especially if Bruckheimer has a say. He even admitted that he has already spoken to Depp about potentially appearing in the future reboot. Check out his full quote below:

"If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp... He's a great actor and good friend... I've certainly spoken to him, but we'll see what happens."

‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Producer Would Bring Johnny Depp Back in New Reboot ‘If It Were Up to Me,’ Thinks Disney Still ‘Really Wants to Make’ Margot Robbie’s ‘Pirates’ Movie

Quote

“Pirates of the Caribbean” producer Jerry Bruckheimer has provided more clarity on the current state of the Disney adventure franchise. He already teased in March that a total reboot was going to be the first “Pirates” movie out of the gate in the future because “it’s easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.” This reboot is now confirmed to have writer Jeff Nathanson attached. Bruckheimer announced the news in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

Nathanson also wrote the screenplay for the last “Pirates” movie, 2017’s “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” which was directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Rønning and Nathanson, as well as Bruckheimer, have reunited on the new Disney biographical drama “Young Woman and the Sea.”

Variety reported in summer 2020 that Disney was in early development on two “Pirates” movies: A reboot led by Margot Robbie and a sixth film in the original franchise written by Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott, the latter of whom co-wrote the first four “Pirates” movies.

Mazin told the Los Angeles Times last year the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 6″ is so weird he is surprised Disney signed off on it, adding: “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then we wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
