ASM #4 cgc 2.0 but has a big chunk missing?

Hey I thought most CGC 2.0 grades allow a maximum of a 1/2” triangle missing. But this looks significantly bigger. Does this 2.0 grade seem right and would this chunk affect the value?

Not familiar with this.  Is that based on Overstreet or something CGC has said?  Seems like that size chunk would be allowed in a 4.0 (surface area of missing piece being the dispositive factor).

A lack of grading consistency is one thing, giving that book a 7.5 is ridiculous.

On the other hand look at the grading scale the site provides. If that missing piece fits the description of "moderate" defect and the rest of the book is basically flawless then they are right on.

Regarding the Spidey #238, I'm thinking that somewhere along the line (after the book was graded) that corner piece fell off and no one caught it. Maybe I need to consider applying for a QC position...  hm

Hello all,

First time on the boards. Looking for feedback on an ASM1 with missing piece/front cover I recently submitted. Feels like a 3.0 but I see many different ranges with a piece missing. It has been pressed. 2.0/2.5? Appreciate the feedback.

You should post it in the Spare a grade section. You'll get allot of great feedback.

Besides the piece missing, that looks like a beautiful copy. If you do post over there, try to share back cover pics and maybe even the interior (if you have them. I know you said it's submitted already).

To me it looks like the corner is just bend to the inside. The graders notes on this are "crease right top of front cover breaks color"

I think the cover is folded, and happened after grading.

Books are graded in their entirety, IMO, the book in question appears to be in GD+ 2.5/GD/VG 3.0 range if the piece were not missing, with the missing piece of course the grade will drop, the problem then becomes, but by how much? Grading comics is about 80% Gray Areas and 20% Black and White and I may be lenient in that assessment. Just on the missing piece, it is too large for a GD 2.0 but too small for a FR/GD 1.5, for me the Goldilocks grade of this book would be GD- 1.8 which is right in the ballpark of the grade it was given.

Below are the grading standards I use to grade books, yes, they may differ slightly from what CGC's grading standards are but these are the standards I cut my teeth on, after 45 years of collecting this is what is in my head.

Overstreet/Heritage Grading Standards

VG 4.0 - As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable.

GD/VG 3.0 -  A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable.

GD 2.0 - The largest piece allowed missing from the front or back cover is usually a 1/2" triangle or a 1/4" square, although some Silver Age books such as 1960s Marvels have had the price corner box clipped from the top left front cover and may be considered Good if they would otherwise have graded higher.

FR/GD 1.5 -  Up to 1/10 of the back cover may be missing.
