CLOVERFIELD 2: THE TRUE SEQUEL (TBD)

Cloverfield 2 is officially happening as J.J. Abrams is developing a true sequel to 2008's Cloverfield. The found-footage style monster movie was a surprise hit upon its arrival over a decade ago. Cloverfield was directed by Matt Reeves and made over $170 million worldwide. This success didn't immediately lead to a franchise, though. Abrams and his production company Bad Robot took time to turn Cloverfield into a franchise, but they did so with spinoffs instead of a sequel.

There have already been two installments of the larger Cloverfield universe. It began with 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016, which was not originally made to be part of the universe. The film from director Dan Trachtenberg was another moderate hit and generated talks of a sequel that never materialized. Instead, The Cloverfield Paradox was made and received a surprise drop on Netflix immediately after the Super Bowl in 2018. After the last installment failed to generate as much interest, the Cloverfield franchise is going back to the beginning.

According to THR, Abrams and Bad Robot are now developing Cloverfield 2 as a true sequel to the original movie. Joe Barton has been hired to write Cloverfield 2 after joining Matt Reeves' The Batman HBO Max spinoff/prequel series as its new showrunner. Abrams is producing Cloverfield 2, but Reeves is said not to be involved with the movie. It is currently not expected to be shot in the same found-footage style as the original, and how it will continue Cloverfield's story is being kept under wraps.

I remember some big deal being made about "If you look at this scene, in this corner of the screen, while squinting...you can see a ship splashing down in the ocean." I could never see it,

I remember that too! And I think it was true, the scene at the fairground had something in the background splash down into the water, a satellite or something. I'm sure they tried to tie it in via the Cloverfield Paradox film.

I always liked the idea that some spin off stories would all loosely connect in some way but it never seemed to take off. Not sure what they plan to do if they are ignoring the paradox and 10 Cloverfield Lane films but I'm definitely interested.

I may be in the minority, but I did not like the Cloverfield movie at all.

Its uniqueness was the found footage approach in a sci-fi film where the monster is kept hidden from film for so long it can feel like Godzilla (2014) - where's the monster in this monster film??

(:

I can see that turning people off and not having fond memories of the film.
