My grading skills are reasonable in the 8.0 - 9.4 range but with anything else I really struggle (though I am getting better with the help of the kind folk on the CGC grading forums). For high dollar books ($200+) I tend to go for slabs or trusted dealers.

I have no problem with buying any raw book I can put my hands on and look over -- regardless of price.

 

The only place I really think a slab helps is when making remote purchases. In that case I would not drop more than $250 - $300 unless I already knew the seller.
