first appearance??? 0

how do you guys determine "first appearances?" like in the case of Illyana Rasputin / Magik? Illyana's first appearance is in Giant Size Xmen #1, but her first appearance as Magik is what is confusing by the labels on the graded books. CGC lists it as New Mutants #14 which was printed on 04/1984. she also appears as Magik in   Magik (Illyana and Storm Limited Series) Vol 1 1  which was released 12/1983, but it isn't posted on the label. I was just wondering what references you guys use?

Thank you for your inquiry.  All First Appearance notations are made at the discretion of the CGC grading team. 

You may check any book on our CGC Census to see what Key Comments, Art Comments and First Appearance notations are currently listed for that book. 

If you do not see a First Appearance notation that you believe should be noted, you may request it.  To request a first appearance update or inclusion of other information to the current label, please include a note both on your printed submission form and also attached to the bag of the specific book (post-it on comic bag) and our graders will review and make a determination on that request during the grading process.

I don't think that answered the question why CGC keeps saying New Mutants #14 is Illyana's first appearance as Magik rather than Magik #1.
