McFarlane Spidey series...why no Venom?

McFarlane has stated in an interview that the only reason they created Venom was because he wanted Peter in his regular red and blue costume because that is how he knew Spider-Man, and wanted to draw him in his classic suit. Venom was the byproduct of taking the symbiote off him and moving it to Brock.  To them, Venom was probably kind of a throw away.

The symbiote had been thought to be dead for three full years by the time Venom made his full debut. Spidey was wearing a regular black costume based on the symbiote design because he had fond memories of how it had tried to bond with him against his will multiple times (or maybe for some other reason :smirk:).

Venom may have been "kind of a throw away" to McFarlane, but Michelinie created the character and started the (very) slow build-up to the revelation that the symbiote was actually still alive before Todd even started working on the Marvel Universe.

I read somewhere that Spidey editor Jim Salicrup didn't want to oversaturate the Spidey books with Venom, so they basically kept him for special occasions. Keep in mind too that McFarlane wrote the book, and was new to writing, so he may have had some ideas for stories floating around and developing in his head for far longer than Venom had been around, so it may have been less of a challenge to bring those ideas forth.

Venom would've fit in nicely with the darker vibe that McFarlane seemed to be going for.

Ultimately Venom should had killed Spiderman/Peter Parker.

He was Spidermans evil twin, which is why they went the way they did, down the path of "antihero" as there was really nowhere to go with the character as a villain. There was really only one path to take
