Let's pretend you asked me this back in 1979. Based on my own personal experience,  I would advise to buy new off the shelf only before any of the comics go up in value. Concentrate on comics that introduce new characters...especially on comics that don't sell a lot of copies. Buy multiples. Buy Marvel only and stay away from DC. If they start printing comics based on a movie like Star Wars, something that looks like it might have staying power over several decades, buy lots.  After you buy them. bag and board them right away and store them horizontally. Also, ignore anyone that says the hobby is on it's last legs as they've been saying that for over 40 years. Then see what you have in 40 years. If history repeats itself again, and you bought enough copies, you will have a $1,000,000.00 collection. But remember, that last sentence started with "If".
