Functions of white blood cells in immunological response:
T lymphocytes make more t cells, cytokines (cell killers), kill infected cells by phagocytosis (eating them basically).
B lymphocytes- make antibodies. antibodies act by attaching to invaders, clumping them together so other cells can eat them.
basophils- make histamine for inflammation response-increasing blood flow and allowing substances to pass into cells easier
neutrophils-kill infected cells
eosinophils-kill infected cells, moderate inflammation response
NK (natural killer) cells-basic response to attack-attacks anything foreign without antibody response.
Monocytes-arrive at infection site and differentiate into macrophages or dendritic cells as needed.
Macrophages-attack anything it does not recognize
Dendritic cells-locate antigens of invaders and alert other white blood cells to respond. Kinda like passing around wanted posters.
Its all very similar to a military action, all the cells working together.
Thus cuncloodes basic lesson in immunology.
