My mother grew up in rural Kansas with 8 brothers and sisters.  It wasn't frequent, but they were all told to go out and cut a switch when it was time for a whipping.  It seems barbaric in today's permissive climate, but neither my mom nor any of her brothers and sisters ever spent a night in jail or participated in a drive-by.

I had to get a switch a few times as a kid. If not that, it was the belt. Sad thing is, I probably deserved it 80% of the time. I was a very mischievous child.
