Is the tape serving a purpose like sealing a spine split or is to add structural integrity to the book? Is it fixing a flaw?

I honestly have no idea why the tape is there it was like that when I bought it.

Honestly I don't mind tape all that much. I used it a lot on books when I was a kid. The collecting community used to look at it differently too.

In your copy it doesn't seem to be covering or repairing a flaw. The spine has moderate wear with a couple of tears. The book looks about a 4.5 without the tape. I'm guessing it's around a 2.5 with it.

 I'm interested in what others will say. Thanks for posting.

The taping job is at least pretty well done.  Are the staples still present?  I can’t tell. Lol
