HBO Max Latin America will be adding to the platform's Batman animated film library with Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires) from Warner Bros. Animation and DC. The story will center on Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy who must follow a dark path. When Spanish Conquistadors murder his father, Yohualli operates the temple of the bat god Tzinacan to become a symbol of vengeance and battle the invaders while protecting his king.

It will not be the first time the Batman franchise has traveled through time, but it will be the first on-screen Hispanic portrayal of the superhero. Horacio Garcia Rojas (Narcos: Mexico) will voice Yohualli under the direction of Juan Meza-León (Harley Quinn, Rick and Morty). Producers Aaron D. Berger, Carina Schulze and Fernando De Fuentes will work with Alejandro Díaz Barriga, a Mesoamerican historian, to craft the animated film entirely in Mexico. Storyboard artist Meza-León's experience with DC Animated Universe projects and Warner's commitment to Mesoamerican authenticity should make Batman Azteca a unique addition to the franchise.

Warner Bros. Animation and studio Ánima took to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival to give audiences a very first look at the upcoming "Aztec Batman."

Audiences got to see a brief scene of very early and rough footage showing Batman fighting Conquistadors with a big obsidian sword, stalking them with his armor dedicated to the Aztec bat god, Tzinacan, and living in his ancient cave full of Olmec ruins. Towards the end of the presentation, we also got a sizzle reel that looks more complete, showing lots of fighting, a beautifully animated Tenochtitlan full of color and life, and Batman using his glider, here reinvented as a Leonardo da Vinci design Yohualli steals from the colonizers.

A big emphasis of the presentation was the cultural specificity and authenticity of the film. This is not just Bruce Wayne trapped in time, but a new character with the same essence of vengeance. This caused difficulties for the designers in trying to stay away from the classic image of Batman and his silhouette.

"No big jaw, no big shoulders. Slimmer. A little less Schwarzenegger, a little more Bruce Lee," director Juan Meza-León explained. Meanwhile, producer José Carlos García de Letona highlighted the importance of working with an expert on Aztec culture. "We wanted to be true to the story we were telling," García de Letona added, adding that they opted for a "leaner physique."

Every DC Animated Movie Coming In 2024

The upcoming animated movie Batman Azteca: Choque De Imperios is a true DC Elseworlds tale, re-imagining the Dark Knight as a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl (voiced by Horacio Garcia Rojas). After the murder of his parents by Spanish Conquistadors, Yohualli becomes an ancient, Meso-American version of the Caped Crusader. Batman Azteca is directed and co-written by Juan Jose Meza-Leon, and while few other major details have been revealed about it, the character re-invention it gives to Batman is a unique one that makes it a very intriguing DC animated movie.
