For me, one of the more memorable scenes from the original series occurred during 'The Savage Curtain' episode, when Lincoln is introduced to Uhura.  His initial response, as interpreted by the writers, reflects how Lincoln may have reacted via a vis the 'foolishness" of his century. This is followed by a brief moment of 'awkwardness', and then Nichols delivering the beautiful line that captures what Roddenberry was hoping people would realize in the turbulent 1960s.  RIP, Nichelle.
