I'm not fully convinced by Colletta's thin lines, but I must admit, the better paper of the omnibus versions shows his detailed inking in a far better light. The cheap newsprint of the original printing tended to swallow up most of his subtlety. This is a particularly fine image, though it requires the colorist (still Stan Goldberg, I think?) to contribute to the three-dimensional illusion.

That was digitally recoloured for the Masterworks editions.

I wonder if anyone on this site has a copy of the original. It would be interesting to compare!

I don't think I have this issue but I have some others from around the same timeframe. I'll scan a page or 2 from an original along with the corresponding Masterworks pages. The colour was 'fixed' (they used the original plates) for the Omnibus editions, but is reproduced too bright and on glossy paper.

Tales to Astonish #58 - Written Completely by: Stan Lee   Illustrated Deeply by Dick Ayers  Inked Discreetly by Paul Reinman  Lettered Sweetly by S. Rosen

Cover by Jack Kirby (inks by Sol Brodsky)

Lee (or wherever he gets the idea) finally figures out that those silly growth pills are dumb, but it doesn't help this silly story or its goofy cop out ending.

A guy in a tuxedo with a top-hat and cane, called the Magician... how inspired. Should have been called 'Fails to Astonish' at this low point.
