Segar Thimble Theatre Starring PopeyeComic Strip New Year Promotion Original Art (King Features Syndicate, 1932). Popeye the Sailor greets his readers in a specialty drawing designed to appear in print on New Year's Day of 1932. Segar kept his signature character busy even outside the daily-comics continuity, courting newspaper editors and subscribers with a crowd-pleasing zeal. The blank, or mortised, space at lower right was designed for an individual paper to insert its own message, such as subscription or delivery information. This near-unique drawing was designed for newspapers known as Herald; Segar is known to have prepared other such greetings for papers named Globe, or Tribune, or Times, or etc., etc., etc.... This piece, ink on Bristol board, measures out at 6" x 7.25", affixed to an 8" x 10" backing card.
