What is original art?

57 posts in this topic

Can someone please explain to me what exactly is original art?

Also, how does someone acquire original art (besides buying it from a marketplace)? My question I guess is how do the people that are selling OA get it in the first place? Make any sense?

Generally speaking artists get back their art and then sell their art to the public. Classic art from the by-gone era (Classic Gold/ Silver Age) have been on market for several years. There is a Original Art category on Ebay,...and there are many dealers who sell OA,...many of their advertisements can be found at

It's really pretty simple. Publishers return art to the artists after they are done shooting it for print. The artist, who is more concerned with drawing than selling stuff, gives it to a rep who sells it on his behalf. The rep usually takes a piece of the sale (10%-25%) and the artist gets the rest.

Some artists don't sell their art so they have stacks and stacks of the stuff sitting around. This is usually one of the driving factors for the prices of some modern artists' work -- supply.

So what if I wanted to get a particular ASM cover (copper age mid 80's) I really admire. How would I go about finding it?

Well,...for starters,..is it here ? :

WOW - that was amazing!!

Stupid question coming...

makepoint.gifso if I buy a cover or page sketch, there is only 1 in the entire world, correct? So if I buy it, that's it, it's off the market?

My story is I used to collect comics as a kid and stopped in 1991 or so. I just got back into comics like 6 months ago and started buying again. Back in the 80's there was no cgc, so im also learning my way around values and stuff.

Basically just trying to reintroduce myself to the world of comics. I want to make sure I collect smart, without getting taken for a ride. I never really thought about OA, until today. I was just browsing around on the OA threads and saw some prety cool stuff, which is what led me to this post.

You posted 281 on the thread you sent above, which is why I asked. Check it out:
