At this quality level - and seeing no visible flaws on my monitor - what keeps a "perfect-looking" book like this from getting a 9.9 or a 10.0?

a tiny spine stress, or perhaps a small dent we cant see in the scan. Still, this is a very high grade book that has to be held in order to tells its grade.

Tiny corner problems would keep a modern out of 9.8 imo.

I thought half of the books I submitted had a shot at 9.8.

CGC gave it a 9.8., I'd personally give it a 9.6.

That there is a solid 9.4. The two spine stresses around the top staple on the back cover will keep it out of the highest grades. Nice book!

This was the last of the three (ASM 252, FF 156) that made me go .

 

Over all results:

All my potential 9.8s all came back 9.6 or 9.4.

My 9.4/9.6s came back 9.2s with one 9.6 (The Web 1).

And my 9.2 came back 8.0.
