Why NOT to send CGC Comics in for REHOLDERING!!

34 posts in this topic

Hello,

I am new here and normally don't post on forums-but here is my horrible situation-don't let this happen to you! I just sent two of my CGC graded comics in for routine reholdering maintenece-the comics were Werewolf by Night 1 in 9.4 and Tomb of Dracula 67 in 9.4. Both were in near perfect mint holders and were shipped priority mail with delivery confirmation. Werewolf by Night 1 is my favorite comic and I paid close to $300 for it in 9.4! Today I get a dreaded phone call from the shipping manager at CGC telling me that there is a problem: My Werewolf by Night 1 comic appears to have shifted in the CGC case (?) and now looks to be an 8.5! Now there is no damage to the outer box (according to him) and the comic case is completely UNCRACKED and in like new condition! I ask him to send the comic back to me and he refuses, stating that he will credit my account! Now a CGC Wereolf by Night 1 at 8.5 is worth about $70 on ebay right now-a 9.4 is worth about $200+! How the hecjk (for lack of swearing on the forum) could I have lost close to $200, just by sending in my perfect CGC comics for maintenence reholdering?? This amazes me! It is important to point out that the shipping manager claims the comic shifter in the sealed well of the CGC case! Why should I be liable! This amazes so much-why doesn't CGC make a holder that does'nt casue damage to the contents inside??? Any comments are greatly appreciated-thanks for allowing me to vent........I starting to regret entering the comic collectibles market in the firstplace.....

This sounds very bizarre. I would suggest you don;t talk to anyone in Shipping about this. Call back CGC and speak to someone in charge.

I sincerely think that CGC should reimburse you in some way or shape for this kind of stuff. If I send in some of my expensive books and they attempt to call me to say "oops looks like YOUR book got [!@#%^&^] up in OUR holder, too bad you get a 8.0". They'll be hearing from my lawyer, it may just be a simple regrade for them but people could be potentialy outted thousands of dollars.

The only thing that comes to my mind is why in the world would anyone send a CGCed book in for "maintenance"? Wow, tough break, but completely avoidable. Chalk it up to experience and learn from it I guess.

It's all about karma . You screwed me on some cheapie books making me wait close to 3 months before letting me know that you were not going to pay. Of course I would have never received any of this information if I didn't call you. It's truly sad that you would have to lie to a person that you have done business with many times. smirk.gif

I'm assuming these are the books you are talking about?

It shouldn't be about the money. Why shoul CGC compromise their standards for $200? If the book looks to be damaged then they have the obligation to correct the label to reflect the proper grade. If they let this go, then you would be able to cheat someone out of about $200 when they are paying for an "indisputable" CGC label grade of 9.4 when you know that is is truly/should be an 8.5. CGC is NOT in the business of facilitating fraud.

To my experience and knowledge - CGC would not regrade a comic sent in for reholdering (even from red label to blue label unless the outer shell's (and therefore the grade's) integrity has been compromised in such a way that the inner well is damaged and the book inside as well.
