Being in the hotel business, it is definately smart to get your reservations in early. Halloween weekend in Vegas is typically rather crazy (In a fun way), especially on the strip. You will certainly pay premium prices on the Strip, as most of the hotels host some sort of quasi-pornographic costume ball or gala (Definately NOT a bad thing) in one of the myriad of night clubs or club venues.

Another thing to keep in mind is that starting in Late September to early March, this is what Vegas considers it's convention "Season", and the town will have any number of smaller conventions, plus the larger ones (Comdex, Networld/Interop) all before Holiday Season.

Book early, and if you book through the hotels directly, re-check rates as you get closer to arrival date, maybe the property will offer a lower rate, and allow you to book.

With respect to the shows and nightlife in Vegas, "O" by Cirque du Soleil is an absolutely awe-inspiring show, with Mystere' not far behind. (Witness my avatar, from "O", as one of the girls is my Fiance') Cirque just opened a new show, "Zumanity" at the New York New York hotel and casino, which is also an exceptional show, if but a bit different than their traditional fair. This show strikes an "Erotic" tone, and is something certainly more appreciated by couples. None of these shows are on the cheap side, but they are all definately good. I also enjoy the Blue Man Group, though it is defiantely different than Cirque shows. Another thing, you could always save your $75+, and go to anyone of the great strip clubs in Vegas, and I ain't talking about the "Strip", if you know what I mean....

Also, their are several, several good restaurants here. Again, Halloween weekend, better to get something lined up sooner than later, as Trick-or-Treating is not reserved for just children in Vegas. Let's just say that "Nurses", "Pimp's", and "Ho's" costumes are all very popular that time of year!

Gold Coast you say? Not bad. Only about 300 miles from me. We'll have fun anyway, despite your cantankerosity. I'll bring the "Happy Helmet" for you. Lord knows, you can use a few jolts off of it!!
