Bruce, this is a very interesting thread. The multi-panel covers existed in the eary Silver Age Marvel era (see TOS 39 and ASM 4, and many others) and even in the pre-hero era. I can post examples but don't want to derail the Bronze Age aspect of this thread.

 

I was also very enamored of those covers.
