Batmobile Sells for $233,000

Auctions/Prices, Scoop, Friday, March 02, 2007

A Batmobile built to promote the 1960's hit show Batman was sold by Coys Auction in England for $233,000. The auction house is a world-respected specialist in the field of race cars, sports car and collectible automobiles. They listed the car as part of their Spring 2007 Auction. It was held on February 27. You can find out more by visiting http://www.coys.co.uk/index.php.

The Batmobile was initially designed by famed custom car designer George Barris. He was given a mere three weeks to create something that could capture the feel of what he saw in the comics and in ABC's production designs.

Luckily Barris had allready purchased a car that Ford had designed for the 1955 New Car show. Barris took the basics of a Lincoln Futura concept car, made a few modifications, extended some fins and added a lot of gadgets. TV audiences fell in love with the car the first time they saw the show.

To build on the publicity that the show created, ABC commissioned several copies of the automobile. These cars would tour the country as promotional tools during supermarket openings, car races, air shows and any event that they could find.

No one knows exactly how many copies were made. In addition, not all of the models built were fully functioning. The one sold by Coys is believed to be the sixth one built and it is completely functional. It was built by was Jay Orhrberg.

The Batbike is owned by a guy in my city; I saw it when I appraised his house. Much different in person.

That's a lot of coin for a car most people won't drive, I hope it brings the new owner a lot of happiness!

Hi Mark. Im bummed too ! I surely would have taken a shot at this but never knew it was availible. Our mutual friend owns Batmobile # 2 . Its worth alot more than this car sold for and was bought directly from Barris, so it is very authentic. There were no middlemen.Interestingly. I believe # 2 is Fiberglass. To my knowledge there were only 5 cars. This 6th is a real mystery to me and I at least question its authenticy.

Note !! The car was built to promote the show. The car was NOT used on the show! It was whats called a touring car, to promote the show.

Only Batmobile # 1 was USED on the show. Barris still owns Batmobile # 1 IN California. I had called him 7 months ago about a possible purchase. He got back to me with a quote of 2 mill. Way outta my leauge. I was hoping for a small mortgage. Hey, ya gotta try.

Ouch, $200k, yes, I would be interested. $2 mil, no thanks.

Here is a prior thread where we discussed various batmobiles.

West coast, east coast[2 of them], north west,

They are scattered

Anybody know if Dave Anderson still has his Batmobile?

I still remember when he sold the Church copy of Flash #1 (I believe it was) to fund his purchase of the Batmobile. That was fun as he was quite jacked up about it at the time.

You've homed in on the real issue here. The car that was auctioned was effectively a promotional replica. The only car of real value would be the one actually used in the movie.

Exactly Barris still owns Batmobile # 1 IN California. I had called him 7 months ago about a possible purchase. He got back to me with a quote of 2 mill. Way outta my leauge. I was hoping for a small mortgage. Hey, ya gotta try.

This doesn't surprise me. This is a collectible that transcends comics and therefore pulls in the whole movie/TV memorabilia collecting crowd, which raises the price exponentially.

Barris [the original builder] Built the first 5 cars. Only the first car[# 1] WAS USED ON THE SHOW. The next 4 were used for promotional purposes.Where this 6th came from is a surprise to me.I at least question if it was built by Barris.

Would still be fun to drive down the streets in it, whether used on the show or not!!!! yay.gif

If that's what it takes for you to get chicks, so be it. poke2.gif

Having met Mrs. Esquirecomics, I don't think she'd go for a guy in the Batmobile.

Given that she was willing to marry Mr. Esquirecomics, I don't know how much weight should be given to her opinions. 27_laughing.gif
