America's Best Comics

Black Terror

Exciting Comics

Fighting Yank

Startling Comics

Thrilling Comics

Wonder ComicsSome years ago when I re-entered the hobby after a nearly twenty year absence, I decided to focus almost entirely on Golden Age books. I had a few but most of my collection (that I had retained and sat dormant) was Silver and Bronze Age. I loved Timelys but they were far outside my budget for the most part. Also, given that I am inclined to be a completest and want to get entire runs, I know Timely was a publisher I could afford. So what to do - the Nedor/Better/Standard line seemed like the place to be. They offered everything I wanted plus at that time they were fairly affordable (can't say the same today) as I really don't consider them a poor person's Timely. My desire was to get nice presentable examples of every issue. Grade wasn't a huge deal although most of my current collection probably falls around 7.0-7.5. So the quest began and still goes on. I picked up many dupes as I have upgraded as I have gone along. Some peds are scattered throughout, some highest graded examples also. To date, I have completed the following:America's Best Comics (the only run that is all slabbed)Black TerrorFighting YankWonder ComicsI lack around 65 issues to complete my quest. Still at this point, it is not a lack of finding issues - it is a matter of fitting into my budget. And since I stray from this focus often - most recently I purchased a Spider-Man #1 for my Marvel SA collection (now just lack the big boy AF #15), my funds continually get depleted fairly quickly. I have gone through stages of getting out of the hobby again to making purchases like a man with nothing standing in my way.For now the quest goes on, and on, and on.....To see old comments for this Journal entry, click here.
