Getting ready for next show and FREE STUFF if you meet me at the Wayne NJ show.

On Sunday I'll be at the Wayne NJ Toy and Collectibles show. You can check out the homepage here: http://waynenjtoyandcollectiblesshow.com/

This is the second time I've done the Wayne show. It's a firehouse style show, a step above a swap meet but lots of fun items all around.

Getting ready for my first show last month was tough, I had to take it like a blue sky project and just brainstorm how much I could bring to fit onto two tables. I cleared out some toys, but brought a ton of dollar books, many of which were recent ones that I didn't feel I needed to take to CGC (although they had some high 9s as far as quality goes). Someone took a whole bundle of my Batgirls and sadly no one took any X-Men.

I brought some low grade slabs that I was trying to clear out, some 8.5s and such and had success moving a Black Terror and Exciting Comics, both slabbed. I was really hoping to get back my current order of X-Men books so I could put my lower graded copies for sale; I've been laddering my collection by buying a higher grade, then selling off the lower graded copy... to put the money towards an even higher grade...

What was interesting to me was how people who didn't know CGC LOVED to pick up the slabs and look at the books. I didn't realize that slabs have a "please touch" appeal to the casual enthusiast. If you can get them to pick it up, you can start a conversation and usually work that into a sale. The things I've learned very quickly from flea markets and one show! While a lot of kids wanted to open up the books, it was like magic to them to see this special book and be able to get so close and hold it. It made me think that the CGC appeal can keep the hobby alive.

Also, it's tough to market your longboxes. Often I have to pull some issues to "stand" as eye candy, and I found quickly that the casual showgoer seems to have a thing for Superman. I had about 10 different people ask and sadly, I left those books at home.

It's a great learning experience for me, and I'll be bringing more slabbed books with me again on Sunday. Some good, but the not so good ones will be clearing out at deep deep prices (losses *cough cough*)

IF YOU ARE READING THIS, AND CAN FIND ME, use the secret password DUCKDUCKMIKE when you come to my table and I'll let you take a free dollar book... or you can take TWO with any purchase of $1 or more.

I've attached a pic of my area from the last show; you might be able to make out my sad sad purple label 1.8 Atoman #1... I couldn't GIVE that thing away!
