Nick Fury....?

"Really? Cause I seem to remember Nick Fury being--"

Created in 1963 by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Ayers, Nick Fury was the leader of the Howling Commandos or at least that's what comicvine says. He was never really a character I followed as a child nor as an adult. He was simply this shadowy figure who secretly gave orders, smoked a lot, and wore an eye patch. I knew who he was and I knew what he looked like. One of my favorite story lines when I came back to comics was the Secret Invasion story and where I began to respect the character once again as a valued member of the Marvel Universe.

Then Ironman the movie came out and....wait who's the black guy? "I'm Nick Fury"....um ok. This confused me a little. I'm not biased over what his cultural identity is but I don't like it when they jump a cultural boundary for the sake of simply placing an known actor in there. Samuel L Jackson is an amazing actor and I loved him in Pulp Fiction but he just didn't fit the bill for me in the beginning because as I had begun reading again I thought how the hell he goes from one race to another. I'm sure they could have used Robert Redford, Liam Neeson, or any other number of credible actors who were, yes, Caucasian.

So I was then handed a TPB by my LCS owner and said well in the Ultimate Universe he's Samuel L Jackson. Read it over and I noticed it never really mentions how he changes it just does it. Later on after the Fear Itself story line an additional series comes out and attempts to explain it. Battle Scars, does a decent story write up. The current Nick Fury is actually Nick Fury Jr. but happened to be named Marcus also.

So here's what brings me to why I wrote this. A friend told me to check out the re-launched Secret Avengers. I have to say I was pretty well against it at first. If you have had a chance to see Scottie Young's variant it pretty much summed it up for me. "Is the word Secret code for no powers" This is kinda what I envisioned in this series but knowing his taste for quality reads I said sure and downloaded it onto my iPad.

If you haven't checked It out yet I certainly do recommend it if not for anything else other than Nick Spencer's writing. There were two amazing conversations which I thought went hand in hand with my transition from reading as a kid and then picking it up as an adult.

The 1st conversation-- Bad Guy asks Hawkeye "You used to wear a mask, right? A Big Purple mask with pointy things and an H" "I think I liked you better with the Mask" -- Hilarious to me as this was about the time when I had dropped from reading about Hawkeye in the Avengers West Coast. Just funny how this was awesome for me in the transition of what happened to his mask and why does he always wear sunglasses.

The 2nd and the reason for this entire.....rant? Was the back and forth between Hawkeye and Agent Hill.

Hawkeye -- "Hold on, I remember you....Marcus, right? Marcus--

Agent Hill -- "Nick Fury. His name is Nick Fury now."

Hawkeye -- "Really? Cause I seem to remember Nick Fury being--"

Agent Hill -- "It's his name now, Deal with it, Move on. Agent Fury?"

Best way for Marvel to move the subject along and honestly the best way for them to tell me that this is now the new Nick Fury. I don't know if I will pick this up in a raw form or not but I will at least give this series another 2 issues of downloaded chances to continue to entice me.

So there you have it... "Deal with it"....I guess I will.
