Gotta be one of the first Cons in AZ...

Im in the process of reading Avengers 180 thru 220 and ran across a special announcement on the letters page of issue 198. This is the issue where the Avengers fight Red Ronin...the robot the government created to take on Godzilla. I dont normally read through the letters page, but this SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT from Jim Shooter caught my eye...

An Unabashed Plug, actually, to alert Marvelites everywhere that Smilin Stan Lee himself will be making one of his rare (these days) convention appearances at this years PhringeCon. For the uninitiated, PhringeCon will be held at the Adams Hotel in beautiful downtown Phoenix, July 11-13, 1980. Besides Stan, there will be other Bullpenners, including the Xmens star writer Chris Claremont, some of the biggest names in Science Fiction, and a host of nifty exhibits and activities. Write to Greg Shirley, PhringeCon, Inc., P.O. Box 1072, Phoenix, Arizona 85001 for details about admissions prices and accommodations. Check it out!

Kinda cool, right? This might have been one of the first comic book conventions in Phoenix. I found a site that shows a picture of the Adams Hotel in a postcard but it appears theres nothing else left of it today. Its a shame, it looked like a pretty cool hotel. The Con itself seems to have lasted only a couple of years from what I could I find. Good thing we have the Amazing AZ Con and the Phoenix Con today! Anyway, I thought this was cool bit of history so thought Id pass it along.

Til next time...
