My first experience with CGC grading

Overall, a bit disappointed.

I hesitated to start with submitting a book for grading due to the fact that it looks to be expensive. So, I began reading everywhere on both collectors-society and CGC grading sites. When you never had experience doing things like this it is quite complicated to figure out how to proceed and how much it is going to cost.

On the CGC comics site there is a form on the "Contact" page you can fill. Don't bother, they won't answer.

So far I tried the forum (http://boards.collectors-society.com/), sending e-mails and calling.

I never got any answer from anyone at CGC or collectors society by electronic way. The only thing that works is to call their toll free number. When you call them you get someone to help you pretty fast.

If you are not going to provide support any other ways than by phone, you should remove the support form from the web site.

I finally decided to to try it. So, I filled the submission form.

I did that after paying for the 1 year "Associate" subscription ($40) which grant you access to submit books for grading.

And shipped my book.

I paid the 15 days turnaround (10 days estimate) fee for modern books ($28).

Shipped it on 2014/09/10 and they received it the next day 2014/09/11 and they shipped it back on the 2014/10/07

That is 18 business days.

I read that it is a problem they've had since a while. It takes much longer than what they estimate on the site.

Why not updating the turnarounds and make it more accurate for us?

Also I paid for the "Imaging fee" ($5). So, when they finished grading and the book is sealed they scan it and send you the picture by e-mail. I had to call them to send me the scan (after I received the physical book) because they were not sending it.

If you expect grading notes it is not likely you will have some. They rarely add grader notes. And if they do, it is only very few words on one or maybe 2 lines. It is really not worth the $5 extra fee.

I think that if we could have more precise information about the steps or the checklist of the process of grading, it would really help us having a better understanding of the what influences the final score. And it would add credibility to CGC. They don't really need more credibility for now. But, for me, the credibility keeps dropping.
