  1. I don't see how this could work. The only thing that would work is to re-adapt Watchmen and do it faithfully, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to do that at this point. The film, while deeply flawed, trod the plot pretty closely already.

Any kind of spin-off would be.. blasphemous (and I know that sounds like fanboy whining, because it kinda is).

If he wants to make a series then he should find a different property.

  2. Finally got to watch the episode. In season 1 they took some "aggressive" liberties with the Batman mythos. In season 2 they have apparently started to absolutely mess on it.

I am kind of shocked, with Batman being DC's golden goose, and with one of the most fleshed out and well known backstories with a fairly solid continuity(compared to many others anyways) that they have allowed the show to go so far away from the source material.

It is so far removed at this point it is ridiculous.

I like show all in all and will continue to watch it, but I will just have to imagine this occurred on Earth 21982449 because this certainly isn't anything remotely close to Earth 1 Batman's backstory.

With the way DC has protected the character in the past I really can't believe they OKed the -script of this show.

It's a bit like gothic Smallville really. To be fair, if they didn't play havoc with the continuity they would be hard pressed to have anything interesting to do with young Bruce.

  3. I enjoy the show, but the writers' moral compass is a little off.

In this episode you had Bruce lecture Gordon that "the ends justify the means". Gordon is persuaded, and has Penguin brutally murder at least one innocent man in order to get his job back so that he can do 'good works'.

I don't believe any comicbook hero of Bruce's stature should ever... EVER... suggest that that is OK. This isn't Spiderman agonizing over stealing a solid gold notebook or something, this is one of the two greatest comicbook heroes of all time saying that it's OK to commit an atrocity if you reckon, on balance, that it'll help you prevent more atrocities in future. Rubbish.

It's a fun series though. Funnily enough my favourite scenes are those involving young Bruce and Alfred.

I got the chance to watch it last night.

I liked this episode, because it at least was consistent how twisted things are across Gotham prior to an aggressive savior such as Batman. A horrible place to live!

But what concerned me is how Jim Gordon was handled. He is supposed to be the uncompromising, consistent hero that unfortunately stands alone for years before Batman steps out from the shadows. Either they are going to use his actions from the Season 2 premiere to drive his efforts further so as never to be put in that situation again, or that the guilt is what eats away at him where he even needs a Batman to inspire him again.

Bruce's statement to him are the words of an inexperienced child. I hope that was what they were going after with the discussion between him and Jim Gordon. Especially with Alfred telling him he is speaking as a child with no worldly direct knowledge yet.

Yes, good points. And you can excuse Bruce by arguing it is his immaturity and anger, since Gordon is talking about being unable to continue the pursuit of his parents' murderer.

  5. Nice group shot! I think I like the #12 cover the best of that bunch.

That's interesting about the insert in the #1 & #2. I didn't realize it was not attached to the interior.

I've seen several and they've never been attached in any way, nor is there any sign of how they could have been attached. I'm confident they have always been loose inserts.

  6. Does anyone here collect the UK series Star Wars Weekly? I picked up a few nice copies recently, and hope to pick up a few more. Some covers are just taken direct from the US series, but there are many really cool totally original covers as well.

I see there are only a small handful of issues on the CGC census. I guess I didn't realize CGC graded them. Is this something new, or are the issues just not worth enough to justify the grading cost?

I had some graded a few months ago. They look very nice :)

I was pretty peeved by CGC's inconsistent approach to handling loose free gifts though, as mentioned in another thread.

  7. I just watched the first 8 episodes of Arrow. I tried, I really tried to give this a chance.

This show is so lame. The acting is horrible.

Drunk rich kid comes off an island, learns karate and how to shoot a bow, wants to fight crime and right the wrongs of his father.

8 episodes in and he already has 2 people who know his secret identity, one of whom he *spoon* and then makes her a sidekick and gives her a costume, then they kiss after he shows her how to fight crime the "right" way?

And this got the green light for a 3rd season?

    2c

The entire first season is horrible. I'd literally rather watch my living room wall, and at times I did. But I got through it with sheer will power (vodka). Season 2 is much better, by which I mean it's pretty lame, but I almost liked an episode or two, and I'm hoping the trend continues.

  8. In desperation for more superhero material to watch, I recently embarked on season 1 of Arrow. I'm up to about episode 11. Someone tell me, does it get any better? It's almost literally torture right now it's so boring, but I know from experience that a show can learn from its mistakes and get better in subsequent seasons.

For the record, I did struggle through to season 2, and season 2 is a LOT more enjoyable. Still not Flash enjoyable, but at least not a total chore to watch like season 1. Speaking of Flash, fun to see his introduction in this.

    :gossip:

    It`s a CW show.

You know their demographic is not aimed at us.

    What did you expect?

    True Detective?

    An example is

My 19 year old son and 29 year old sister say Arrow is the best show on TV.

Well, yeah, but Flash has been lots of fun right from the start. Not so Arrow!

  11. Messy finale with Fish, Penguin, Falcone and Moroni all just running around, splitting up, finding each other again, splitting up again... Come on, I thought these people were criminal masterminds? Oh well, I like Penguin, I'm glad he 'won'.

Not impressed by Selina. Being a young tearaway is one thing, but cold and murderous toward nice Jim Gordon? What could Fish possibly have offered her? She has previously demonstrated a complete lack of interest in money or advantageous associations. Why latch onto a weird mobster woman?

Ending with Bruce was pretty cool. But my Batman lore is weak (I only ever read the obvious core TPBs and was never a DC reader). Did his dad have such a secret? If they are inventing a bunch of new backstory for Thomas Wayne, I don't think that's cool. But like I said I was never a Batman reader, so what do I know.

  12. ...

But I was expecting her to show a bit of backbone once she realised she was in trouble, not become this whimpering, cowering wreck. Did she really sell out her parents? What?!? Was she just broken at the end there? If so, the character cannot be redeemed. She is a pathetic coward.

Barbara was drugged. Whatever she drank that the Ogre provided when she was dehydrated affected her, after she drank it she slowly fell to the ground so it obviously affected her physically and I assume mentally to make her very responsive to any suggestions. Can I also add, I thought she never looked better than when she was tied up in the dungeon. Yummy

Ah, yes, now that you mention it I did wonder if the water were drugged, but then it didn't emphasize enough how addled she was (or would have to be) to name her parents. Maybe they will clear this up next ep.

Surely she could have thought of someone better to name. Like Falcone maybe? You know, that mob boss that had her kidnapped and roughed up? Duh.

  13. Did they set out to make Barbara so freaking annoying...Laurel in Arrow pales in comparison.

    God yes.

I have no problem with her sleeping around, and in fact I think it is good and progressive to portray female characters that are unashamed of their sexuality in the same way that male characters always have been. Although deciding to spend the night engaging in god knows what unconventional debauchery after walking into the Ogre's BDSM dungeon was a step too '50 shades' if you ask me.

The show's really picked up with these last three episodes though. Am enjoying it a lot again.

  14. Cline's second book, Armada, come out in a few months. Pretty excited. Ready Player One was amazing.

I just looked that up. Isn't that the plot of The Last Starfighter ? hm

Probably not. I'm sure Cline has something different planned, but I'll bet you anything you like he's going to reference said movie.

  15. I thoroughly enjoyed the book, but its appeal is entirely down to referencing cool nostalgic stuff. Otherwise, it reads like a pretty amateur fanfic (I'm so sorry, but it's true!) But I really did love reading it, so here's hoping they get permission to put in all the vital reference material.

The fun of the book is basically wrapping a schoolboy fantasy heroic adventure around a drunken reminiscence with stoned mates saying "Oh wow, remember playing D&D? That was awesome. And remember we used to play Asteroids on one of those cocktail table cabs at the café? God I could quote Holy Grail / War Games / Ferris Bueller all day couldn't you? Those 80s anime shows were great...etc etc." (With 'Safety Dance' playing on the record player).

But I can't wait to see giant Ultraman 'Ultra-Slice' Mechagodzilla above a battlefield teeming with retro sci-fi/videogame/comicbook avatars.

  16. I see some WTBs that are clearly people looking for stuff to flip, and that's just daft.

If you post a WTB you should expect to pay full current FMV or more, because you're asking people to sell you books that they might not otherwise be selling. It's for people who really want something that they haven't been able to find, not for bargain hunting.

I find it quite offensive when people essentially ask a seller to give them money for nothing i.e. "Please sell me silver age keys at bargain prices." Why should they? And no, it's not OK to ask. Asking for that is the same as going up to someone and saying "You look fairly unintelligent. May I rip you off please?"

There are exceptions. Maybe someone really wants a run for which there is virtually no demand. In that case a seller might be happy to offload the books at a 'bargain' price, since they can't shift the books at anything like guide anyway. That situation is great for both buyer and seller.

  17. "A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers"

    -------------------

Please please please that would be SO COOL.

I think one of my favourite things about Spidey was when he was portrayed not as a heavy hitter, and rather as a gifted amateur, while the 'real superheroes' protected the world from cosmic threats and evil plots of world domination. And yet he'd always have those moments where he was the centre of the world, and the big guys would be in his debt. It obvious why that sort of underdog / 'little guy amazes everyone' story appealed to me.

So yeah, I would LOVE to see Spidey as the little guy meeting the heavy-hitting Avengers, being underestimated, and then teaching them a lesson.

  18. I'm guessing the doctor will be impressed by this Fish person's chutzpah, and will fix her up with a new eye and a job.

I'm disappointed with Penguin's role being so diminished lately. Hoping he gets another chance to shine. In the meantime the stuff with Alfred and Bruce is good.

  19. On the other hand, back in the early 80s my family and friends thought I was nuts for spending good money on old comics, and for obsessing over maintaining their condition. I kinda believed them too, and I didn't spend too much on them, and I stopped completely around the early 90s.

God damn I wish I'd had the courage of my convictions and spent every spare penny I could on acquiring decent comics and keeping them! I'd probably be able to retire today if I had.
